Abstract

A mechanism of spatial self-phase-modulation of light in a photorefractive crystal subjected to an external alternating electric field is proposed. An experimental study of such modulation is reported for a barium sodium niobate crystal.

Change in the refractive index of a photorefractive crystal during formation of a spatially screened soliton

S. A. Asselborn, Наталия Дмитриевна Кундикова, Igor' V Novikov

A change in the refractive index of a photorefractive barium-sodium niobate crystal in an alternating electric field during the propagation of intensity-modulated coherent radiation in it is studied. It is shown experimentally that a change in the refractive index in the soliton regime in a photorefractive crystal with a small nonlocal response is independent of the external-field amplitude and intensity-modulation depth.

Self-action of a light beam in a photorefractive crystal in an alternating electric field upon synchronous intensity modulation

Marina N. Frolova, Stanislav M. Shandarov, Maksim Vladimirovich Borodin

The propagation of a light beam in a photorefractive crystal in an alternating meander electric field is studied. A nonlinear equation is obtained for a spatial charge field formed in the crystal upon modulation of the light intensity synchronously with the applied electric field. It is established theoretically that the spatial charge field has two components, which make contributions to different mechanisms of a photoresponse providing self-focusing and the appearance of spatial solitons, as well as the trajectory self-bending. The conditions are found at which the soliton regime is realised and parameters affecting this regime in a greater extent are determined.

Role of the local response of a photorefractive medium in the formation of a spatial screened soliton

S. A. Asselborn, Наталия Дмитриевна Кундикова, I V Novikov

The propagation of intensity-modulated laser radiation in a barium—sodium niobate crystal is studied in an external electric field. The possibility of controlling a nonlinear local response of the crystal is demonstrated. It is shown experimentally that the conditions of formation of a one-dimensional spatial soliton can be changed by varying the nonlinear response of the crystal.

Adaptive interferometer based on wave mixing in a photorefractive crystal under alternating electric field

Alexei A. Kamshilin, Alexander I. Grachev

Coupling of two waves with different polarization states in a photorefractive crystal under an ac electric field allows us to achieve the linear transformation of a small transient phase shift into the intensity modulation without any output polarization filtering. This can lead to design of an adaptive interferometer with sensitivity that reaches the classical homodyne detection limit.

Soliton-controlled switching in photorefractive media

Eugenia D. Eugenieva, Rostislav V. Roussev, Stoyan Dinev

Soliton-controlled switching in photorefractive media using quasi-steady-state photorefractive, spatial solitons has been studied theoretically. The optimal beam diameters, separations and other parameters have been found for the case of a strontium barium niobate (SBN) crystal. On—off ratios higher than 10 have been obtained

Hybrid optical bistability by two-wave-mixing photorefractive crystal with alternating electric field

Marina N. Frolova, Stanislav M. Shandarov, A. Reshet'ko

We present a hybrid optical bistable device configuration with the using of two-wave mixing in a cubic photorefractive crystal by applying the square-wave electric field. The applied field amplitude is linear depending on the intensity of signal beam, provided the feedback.
