Abstract

The quantum theory of nonlinear dynamics and self-switching effect for two coupled waves in nonlinear distributed feedback systems (DFB) have been developed using Hartree approximation for the first time. The quantum limits of observation of self-switching effect for the polarization characteristics of light have been founded. We also predict the formation of nonclassical mesoscopic states (Schroedinger cat like states) of light in such systems as well.

The quantum theory of nonlinear dynamics and self-switching effect for two coupled waves in nonlinear distributed feedback systems (DFB) - cholesteric liquid crystals and/or spatially inhomogeneous optical fibers (waveguides) - has developed for the first time. The quantum limits of observation of self-switching effect for the polarization characteristics of light have been founded.

Mesoscopic quantum properties and the fundamental limit of switching of polarization states of light in spatially periodic systems

A. Yu. Leksin, A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan

Quantum analysis of the nonlinear dynamics and self-switching of unidirectional waves in nonlinear systems with distributed feedback is carried out in the Hartree approximation. Quantum limitations on the observation of self-switching are found for the polarization characteristics of light. The formation of nonclassical mesoscopic states of light is predicted. The phenomenon of optical “superfluidity” in systems with distributed feedback is discussed.

Quantum computing and fundamental limit of self-switching effect for nonlinear spatially inhomogeneous bosonic systems

The quantum theory of nonlinear dynamics and self-switching effect for two coupled bosonic modes in nonlinear spatially inhomogeneous system shave been developed using Hartree approximation for the first time. The quantum limits of observation of self-switching effect for the polarization characteristics have been founded. We also predict the formation of nonclassical mesoscopic states in such a system as well. We also propose four-mode interaction in the systems under consideration for quantum XOR and SWAP logic operations.

Quantum Stochasticity in the Stokes Parameters of Light, Polarization, Switching and Procedure of Nondemolition Measurements of Distributed Feedback Systems

A. P. Alodjants, A. Yu. Leksin, Sergei M Arakelyan

The analysis of formation of chaotic quantum states for two (or four) orthogonally polarized modes in a tunnelly-coupled optical fiber (TCOF) has been carried out. A special attention is devoted both to the structure of arising polarization instabilities and to the possibility to control of such a quantum state by procedure of quantum nondemolition measurements. New effect of polarization switching is obtained. A new method of generating correlated fluctuations in optical field, based on Raman-Nath diffraction by a fine grating, is discussed. A nonclassical effect is predicted: a suppression of quantum fluctuations below the level of full coherence in the sum of difference photon numbers for the transmitted and scattered waves. The physics of this phenomenon involves a correlation of quantum fluctuations in the intensities of two modes that are coupled nonlinearly. This correlation is most effective in the limit of parametric interaction between the waves in the medium.

Quantum-classical correspondence and nonclassical state generation in dissipative quantum optical systems

K. N. Alekseev, N. V. Alekseeva, Jan Peřina

We develop a semiclassical method to determine the nonlinear dynamics of dissipative quantum optical systems in the limit of large number of photons N; it is based on the 1/N-expansion and the quantum-classical correspondence. The method is used to tackle two problems: the study of the dynamics of nonclassical state generation in higher order anharmonic dissipative oscillators and the establishment of the difference between the quantum and classical dynamics of the second-harmonic generation in a self-pulsing regime. In addressing the first problem, we obtain an explicit time dependence of the squeezing and the Fano factor for an arbitrary degree of anharmonism in the short-time approximation. For the second problem, we analytically find a characteristic time scale at which the quantum dynamics differs insignificantly from the classical one.

Two-mode interactions in DFB systems: polarization-squeezed light and QND measurements

A. P. Alodjants, Sergei M Arakelyan, Anatoliy S. Chirkin

The possibility of formation of polarization-squeezed light in the case of the interaction of two orthogonally polarized waves in the spatio-periodical Kerr medium is considered. It is shown that at the output of such a nonlinear medium fluctuations of one of the Stokes parameter can be less than ones incoherent state. For the first time a procedure of quantum nondemolition measurement (QND) of the Stokes parameters of light is offered and analyzed.
