Abstract

The basic principles of physical effect of coherent population trapping (CPT) were studied as a basis for the development of devices for modulation and demodulation of multi-frequency radiation into the modern DWDM (dense wavelength-division multiplexing) systems that will significantly increase the volume of transmitted data.

Coherent population trapping as a base for modulation multifrequency radiation

Е. В. Вознюк, Y.P. Machehin

This paper presents the search for physical mechanisms and on their basis of selective modulation of the optical frequencies in a distribution of multi-frequency laser radiation is one of the most important problems whose solution will greatly expand the capabilities of existing systems DWDM. One well-known physical effects, providing effective selective interaction of optical radiation with a material medium is the interaction of electromagnetic fields with three-level, or Λ systems. In these three-level system is observed fundamental physical phenomenon a coherent population trapping (CPT). One of the first practical examples of the CPT is to stabilize the emission frequency of optical frequency standards for optical bench, which is a resonance of CPT.

Coherent population trapping in quantum systems

B. D. Agap'ev, M. B. Gornyi, Boris G. Matisov +1 more

Coherent population trapping (CPT) is a technique in ultrahigh-resolution spectroscopy, developed in recent years. It relies on the nonlinear coherent interaction between an atomic system and incident electromagnetic radiation and is followed by an analysis of the fine structure of the response to this interaction, which contains information about the spectral characteristics of the quantum system. The basic physics of CPT are reviewed, and the effects of level relaxation and structure, and of external factors, on CPT dynamics and characteristics are examined. Experimental results confirming the validity of theoretical ideas on CPT are presented. Possible applications of CPT to frequency stabilization, laser cooling of atoms, and so on are discussed.

Suppression of light-field shift of CPT resonances in optically dense media

Daba A. Radnatarov, Sergey M Kobtsev, Valeriy Andryushkov +1 more

Presented for the first time are studies of the effect of optical medium density on the possibility of suppression of light field shift of a coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance excited with multi-component radiation generated by modulation of the injection current of a pumping single-frequency diode laser. It is shown experimentally and theoretically that the possibility of suppressing CPT resonance light shift depends on the optical density of the medium.

CPT resonances under multifrequency pumping

Савинов Константин Николаевич, А. К. Дмитриев, A. V. Krivetskii

Abstract The possibility of detecting coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances with combined microwave and HF modulation of the injection current of a diode laser has been demonstrated for the first time. A series of resonances is observed, separated from each other by half the RF modulation frequency.

Multi-field frequency modulation spectroscopy

We Study a modification of classical FM spectroscopy in the cases where several electromagnetic fields are FM modulated, each in a different manner. This complex spectrum scans a multi-photon resonant atomic medium with the output detected by a phase-sensitive scheme. The demodulated output signal reveals the spectroscopic features of the probed medium. The case in which two different carriers are FM modulated at the same frequency and index but with an opposite phase with respect to each other is analyzed theoretically. This configuration is essential for probing Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) resonances induced by a directly modulated diode laser. Employing a macroscopic model to describe the physical properties of CPT leads to a superb fit between predicted and measured CPT characteristics.
