Abstract

We apply the Green’s function method to show that multimode vector solitons experience strong squeezing on the optimal quadrature. This squeezing results from an almost perfect anti-correlation between the fluctuations of the two incoherently-coupled circular polarisations.

Quantum fluctuations and correlations of spatial scalar or multimode vector solitons in Kerr media

Éric Lantz, Thibaut Sylvestre, H. Maillotte +2 more

We apply the Green function method to determine the global degree of squeezing and the transverse spatial distribution of quantum fluctuations of solitons in Kerr media. We show that both scalar bright solitons and multimode vector solitons experience strong squeezing on the optimal quadrature. For vector solitons, this squeezing is shown to result from an almost perfect anti-correlation between the fluctuations in the two incoherently coupled circular polarizations.

Squeezed quantum states of optical solitons

А. В. Белинский, Anatolii S Chirkin

A study is made of the behavior of quantum fluctuations of optical solitons. It is shown that fluctuations of one of the quadrature components of a soliton can be reduced. In the optimal case the suppression efficiency increases on increase in the traversed distance. A strong squeezing is quite attainable.

Squeezing of quantum solitons

S. J. Carter, P. D. Drummond, M. D. Reid +1 more

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media. Quantum fluctuations are handled via the coherent-state positive-P representation. A stochastic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in the field variables is obtained which predicts wide band squeezing in the region of anomalous dispersion. For soliton inputs, fluctuations are reduced over the soliton bandwidth. This leads to quantum solitons which have quadrature fluctuations less than the level of vacuum fluctuations.

Quantum Correlations, Entanglement, and Squeezed States of Light in Kerr Optical Frequency Combs

Yanne K. Chembo

The dynamical behavior of Kerr optical frequency combs is very well understood today from the perspective of the semi-classical approximation. In this article, we provide a theoretical understanding of the phenomena of quantum correlations, multimode entanglement and squeezed states of light that can occur in these frequency combs when quantum noise is accounted for. We prove that for all stationary spatio-temporal patterns, the side-modes that are symmetrical relatively to the central (pumped) mode in the frequency domain display quantum correlations that can lead to squeezed states of light under some optimal conditions that are analytically determined. We show that these quantum correlations can persist regardless the dynamical state of the system (rolls or solitons), regardless of the spectral extension of the comb (number sidemodes), and regardless of the dispersion regime (normal or anomalous). We study with particular emphasis the two principal architectures for Kerr comb generation, namely the add-through and add-drop configurations. We show that in both cases, the ratio between out-coupling and total losses plays a key role as it directly determines the efficiency of the squeezing. We also explicitly determine the phase quadratures leading to photon entanglement, and analytically calculate their quantum noise spectra. The relevance of Kerr combs for quantum information systems at optical telecommunication wavelengths is also discussed.

Multimode squeezing in soliton crystal microcombs

Melissa A. Guidry, Daniil M. Lukin, Ki Youl Yang +1 more

Soliton microcombs are self-organized pulses of light sustained in driven Kerr microresonators, intensively studied for applications in integrated photonic technologies and for their rich nonlinear dynamics. In this work, we theoretically study the collective dynamics of the quantum fluctuations of soliton microcombs. We find that the mean field of a dissipative Kerr soliton crystal is accompanied by pulses of squeezed multimode vacuum and derives its operational stability from the strong detuning of the below-threshold parametric process. We present a photonic architecture that enables independent control of the above- and below-threshold states and achieves a high degree of squeezing (>15dB) in the output waveguide with realistic losses. Our work elucidates the quantum dynamics of formation and annihilation in dissipative Kerr soliton systems, and establishes a pathway for the realization of a practical integrated source of multimode squeezed light.

Quantum-field theory of squeezing in solitons

P. D. Drummond, S. J. Carter

We develop a quantum theory of propagation in dispersive nonlinear media from the foundations of a correctly quantized field theory. Quantum fluctuations are handled by coherent-state expansions of localized field states. A stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the field variables is obtained for media with an intensity-dependent refractive index. This predicts squeezing for a continuous-wave input, over a wide bandwidth with anomalous dispersion, and over a gradually reducing bandwidth with normal dispersion. The equation is easily modified to include thermal-noise sources as well. For solitons, fluctuations are reduced over the soliton bandwidth. This leads to quantum solitons that have quadrature fluctuations less than the level of vacuum fluctuations. The complementary quadrature has a correspondingly increased fluctuation level.
