Noiseless amplification in cavity-based optical systems with an internal two-photon process. I. General approach

Abstract

We study the features of noiseless amplification in a general class of optical systems, characterized by an intracavity nonlinearity which induces a two-photon process, in the limit where the damping constant of the mode which undergoes the two-photon process greatly exceeds all other relaxation rates of the system. By applying a previously formulated analytical approach, we write the universal-form expressions for the linear amplification factor and the noise figure. Noiseless amplification is attainable under resonance conditions.

Noiseless amplification in cavity-based optical systems with an internal two-photon process. II. Self-frequency-doubling laser and second-harmonic generation, self-down-converting laser

We consider a cavity containing both a χ(2)-nonlinear material and a laser two-level medium for the cases of self-frequency-doubling and self-down-converting configurations. For both situations, the squeezing properties of the two fields are analysed in detail, while special attention is devoted to the problem of ‘noiseless amplification’ of a small monochromatic signal injected in the lower frequency mode.

Optical cavity with intracavity two-photon absorption

Kevin K. Lehmann

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the optical properties of an optical cavity with both one- and two-photon intracavity absorption loss, without saturation. The cavity two-photon absorption loss per pass is assumed to be small, but otherwise the analysis is general. Analytical results for the cavity transmission as a function of cavity parameters, linear and two-photon intracavity loss, and detuning from resonance are derived and limiting cases discussed. Extraction of the two-photon loss from both cavity ring-down and cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy methods is analyzed and the predicted shot-noise limited sensitivities derived and compared. Numerical results are computed using the parameters of a recent experimental intracavity measurement of two-photon absorption of nitrous oxide. The results will be useful in the design and interpretation of cavity-enhanced, two-photon absorption spectroscopy.

Amplitude squeezing from second-harmonic generation in a laser cavity

P Garcia-Fernandez, Luigi A. Lugiato, Francisco Javier Bermejo +1 more

The authors consider the problem of second harmonic generation in an optical cavity which contains both the laser and the nonlinear crystal. They calculate the spectrum of the amplitude fluctuations in the output field, for the mode which is generated by the laser. They focus on the case that the damping constant of this mode is much larger than all the other relaxation rates of the system, and show that in this limit the spectrum is correctly described by the universal normal form for two-photon processes. Finally, they show in general that in the framework of linearised theories the spectrum of the intensity fluctuations in the output field reduces exactly to the spectrum of squeezing of the amplitude quadrature component.

Noiseless amplification of weak coherent fields without external energy

Mikko Partanen, Teppo Häyrynen, Jani Oksanen +1 more

According to the fundamental laws of quantum optics, noise is necessarily added to the system when one tries to clone or amplify a quantum state. However, it has recently been shown that the quantum noise related to the operation of a linear phase-insensitive amplifier can be avoided when the requirement of a deterministic operation is relaxed. Nondeterministic noiseless linear amplifiers are therefore realizable. Usually nondeterministic amplifiers rely on using single photon sources. We have, in contrast, recently proposed an amplification scheme in which no external energy is added to the signal, but the energy required to amplify the signal originates from the stochastic fluctuations in the field itself. Applying our amplification scheme, we examine the amplifier gain and the success rate as well as the properties of the output states after successful and failed amplification processes. We also optimize the setup to find the maximum success rates in terms of the reflectivities of the beam splitters used in the setup. In addition, we discuss the nonidealities related to the operation of our setup and the relation of our setup with the previous setups.
