Surface energy of integrable quantum spin chains

Abstract

The surface energy of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain is derived in the region Delta (-1 from the known Bethe ansatz solution for free boundaries with surface fields. The result gives the surface energy of related models satisfying the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The models discussed are the quantum Q-state Potts chain and a family of isotropic spin-s chains including the spin-1 biquadratic model.

Spin-s quantum chains and Temperley-Lieb algebras

Murray T. Batchelor, Michael N. Barber

The authors construct a family of isotropic spin-s quantum chains consisting of sums of operators satisfying a Temperley-Lieb algebra. Exact values for the infinite lattice limit of the ground-state energy per site and for the (non-zero) gap to the lowest energy excited state follow from the Temperley-Lieb equivalence with a Bethe ansatz soluble XXZ model. The family of spin chains includes the biquadratic spin-1 model.

Thermodynamics of the Isotropic Heisenberg Quantum Spin Chain

Hans-Peter Eckle

Abstract This chapter presents the extension of the Bethe ansatz to finite temperature, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, for the antiferromagnetic isotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain, the XXX quantum spin chain. It discusses how the added complications of this model arise from the more complicated structure of excitations of the quantum spin chain, the complex string excitations, which have to be included in the Bethe ansatz thermodynamics. It derives the integral equations of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for the XXX quantum spin chain and mentions explicit formulas for the free energy of the quantum spin chain and some interesting physical quantities, especially making contact with predictions of conformal symmetry.

Spectrum of the biquadratic spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain

Michael N. Barber, Murray T. Batchelor

An exact correspondence between the staggered biquadratic spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain and the quantum Hamiltonian limit of the nine-state Potts model is established for finite chains with free ends. For uniform interactions this equivalence is used (via a further exact mapping to a Bethe ansatz soluble XXZ model) to calculate exactly the infinite lattice values of the ground-state energy per site and the (nonzero) gap to the lowest-energy excited state. Periodic boundary conditions and the nature of the ground state as a function of bond alternation are also discussed.

Root patterns and exact surface energy of the spin-1 Heisenberg model with generic open boundaries

Jiasheng Dong, Pengcheng Lu, Junpeng Cao +3 more

Abstract We investigate the thermodynamic limit and exact surface energy of the isotropic spin-1 Heisenberg chain with integrable generic open boundary conditions by a novel Bethe ansatz method. We obtain the homogeneous (or two-term) Bethe ansatz like equations for the zero roots of the transfer matrix. Based on the patterns of the zero roots, we analytical calculate the densities of zero roots and the surface energies of the model in all regimes of the boundary parameters.

Specific heat calculations for quantum spin chains with Heisenberg-biquadratic exchange in a magnetic field

H -U Desgranges, John B. Parkinson

The authors present calculations of the specific heat of 1D quantum spin chains for a number of integrable and non-integrable Hamiltonians, in the presence of a magnetic field. For S=1 the Hamiltonian has both bilinear and biquadratic isotropic exchange and includes ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic versions of the Heisenberg, Takhtajan-Babujian (TB), Lai-Sutherland (LS) (permutation) and biquadratic models. The two methods used are (i) direct numerical diagonalisation for chains of up to nine atoms and (ii) numerical solution of the Bethe ansatz equations for the integrable models (TB and LS). Generalisations of the latter method to S>1 are also given. For the integrable models the two methods give results in good agreement. Various types of behaviour, particularly at low T, are found and these are related to known phase changes at T=0. The results of the first method for the non-integrable Hamiltonians are discussed with reference to the existence of the Haldane gap in the S=1 Heisenberg model and a possible gap in the biquadratic model.

Thermodynamic limit and surface energy of the XXZ spin chain with arbitrary boundary fields

Yuanyuan Li, Junpeng Cao, Wen‐Li Yang +2 more

In two previous papers [26], [27], the exact solutions of the spin-12 chains with arbitrary boundary fields were constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA). Here we introduce a method to approach the thermodynamic limit of those models. The key point is that at a sequence of degenerate points of the crossing parameter η=ηm, the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) can be reduced to the conventional ones. This allows us to extrapolate the formulae derived from the reduced BAEs to arbitrary η case with O(N−2) corrections in the thermodynamic limit N→∞. As an example, the surface energy of the XXZ spin chain model with arbitrary boundary magnetic fields is derived exactly. This approach can be generalized to all the ODBA solvable models.
