Manifestation of irreversible relaxation in multiplication of binary numbers by the photon echo method

Abstract

An investigation is reported of the manifestation of relaxation of optical excitation in multiplication of binary numbers by the photon echo method. Calculations are carried out on the basis of the Bloch model and two model spectral diffusion processes are taken into account. The relationships obtained are used to correct the amplitudes of sets of echo signals representing the product of two numbers and thus exclude the relaxation factor from the multiplication procedure.

Two-dimensional optical three-pulse photon echo spectroscopy. I. Nonperturbative approach to the calculation of spectra

Tomáš Mančal, Andrei V. Pisliakov, Graham R. Fleming

The nonperturbative approach to the calculation of nonlinear optical spectra of Seidner et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 103, 3998 (1995)] is extended to describe four-wave mixing experiments. The system-field interaction is treated nonperturbatively in the semiclassical dipole approximation, enabling a calculation of third order nonlinear spectroscopic signals directly from molecular dynamics and an efficient modeling of multilevel systems exhibiting relaxation and transfer phenomena. The method, coupled with the treatment of dynamics within the Bloch model, is illustrated by calculations of the two-dimensional three-pulse photon echo spectra of a simple model system-a two-electronic-level molecule. The nonperturbative calculations reproduce well-known results obtained by perturbative methods. Technical limitations of the nonperturbative approach in dealing with a dynamic inhomogeneity are discussed, and possible solutions are suggested. An application of the approach to an excitonically coupled dimer system with emphasis on the manifestation of complex exciton dynamics in two-dimensional optical spectra is presented in paper II Pisliakov et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 124, 234505 (2006), following paper].

Excitation of photon echo by noise pulses

Баруздин Сергей Анатольевич

The excitation of photon echo by noise pulses that are formed by modulation of the carrying frequency with Gauss noise is modeled. The modeling is based on optical Bloch equations the solution of which for noise pulse realizations is constructed by their stepwise approximation. In terms of the formalism of state transfer matrices, the two- and three-pulse excitation modes are analyzed. The complex envelopes of the primary and stimulated echo responses are determined. In the linear (low-level-signal) mode, the shape of the two-pulse echo corresponds to that of the time delayed and inverted noise pulse. The boundary of the linear mode, upon exceeding of which distortions of the shape of the noise pulse become noticeable, is determined. The shape of the stimulated (three-pulse) echo in the linear mode corresponds to that of the autocorrelation function of the noise pulse realization. Upon passage beyond the boundary of the linear mode, the shape of the three-pulse echo corresponds either to the cross-correlation function of distorted noise pulses (with different intensities) or to the autocorrelation function of distorted pulses (with the same intensities). The modeled photon echo excitation modes can be used in photon echo processors to process signals in the light range.

Numerical Solution and Applications of Photon Echo

Longzhao Lu, Cheng Li, Xiangyang Yu

Important applications in optical information storage and processing based on photon echo have been developed. An accurate and effective numerical method to solve the Maxwell-Bloch equations that are used to describe the optical pulse propagation and interaction with inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium will be introduced.Two-pulse photon echo is calculated then photon echo and multiple-pulse photon echoes are stimulated in optical thin(thick) media by using the method, and the physical properties of those echoes are analyzed. The results show that the approach to storage and retrieval of light using multiple-pulse photon echoes based on stimulated photon echo is an effective mode.

From microsecond spin echo to femtosecond photon echo

Игорь Сергеевич Осадько

Abstract For more than 70 years spin and photon echo excited by micro- and nanosecond pulses have been the subject of research by various scientific groups. Bloch equations are the mathematical basis in these studies. However, Bloch equations cannot describe echo signals if excitation of the electron-vibrational system is realized by short femtosecond pulses. Only theory for density matrix, which is more general than the Bloch equation approach, is able to describe femtosecond relaxation of polarization and decay of femtosecond echo signals. This work gives an overview of the resent results obtained in developing such a general theoretical formalism.
