Abstract

We have analyzed the properties of weak probe absorption in a closed four-level Y -type system driven by a coherent driving field. The system with two nearly degenerate uppermost levels interacting with the same modes of the vacuum radiation field exhibits the interference effect between the spontaneous decay channels. The phenomenon of this quantum interference can significantly change the absorptive response of the weak probe field. On varying the amplitude of the resonant driving field, in the absence of incoherent pumping in the upper transitions the system can display probe transparency as well as enhanced absorption peak under the condition of resonant detuning of the probe field. With the application of incoherent pumping to the system the phenomenon of symmetric light amplification with two distinct gain peaks one each at the positions of Autler–Townes resonances can be achieved in the presence of the decay-interference effect. We have also shown that the unidirectional incoherent pumping mode is necessary for the evolution of probe gain.

Effect of vacuum-induced coherence on single- and two-photon absorption in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Bang‐Pin Hou, Shun-Jin Wang, W L Yu +1 more

When a four-level $\mathsf{Y}$-type atom with two highest nearly degenerate lying levels interacts with the same vacuum radiation field, its excited levels have vacuum-induced coherence due to the quantum interference between the spontaneous decay channels. We consider the effects of the vacuum-induced coherence on the electromagnetically induced transparency against single- and two-photon absorption in the atomic system. We find that the vacuum-induced coherence can lead to probe gain without incoherent pumping. On the other hand, the coherence can suppress the two-photon transparency, even in some cases where it can enhance the two-photon absorption. Another important result is the finding of the crucial role played by the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields: the two-photon transparency and the probe gain spectra can be modulated by this phase.

Effects of vacuum-induced coherence on dispersion and absorption properties in a tripod-scheme atomic system

Bang‐Pin Hou, Shun-Jin Wang, W L Yu +1 more

When the interactions of the two coupling transitions from an excited level to two nearly degenerate ground levels with the same vacuum occur in a four-level tripod-scheme atomic system, vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) results from the quantum interference between the two spontaneous transitions. We investigate the effects of VIC and the relative phase between the two coupling fields on the probe absorption and dispersion properties as well as the group velocity of the probe field. We find that by adjusting the incoherent pumping field and VIC as well as the relative phase, the central absorption peak in the double transparency spectrum reduces, even develops into a gain dip, and the probe field propagates at a velocity from superluminal to subluminal. It is particularly pointed out that the subluminal light propagation with gain without inversion can be realized in such a system. The physical interpretation of the phenomena has been given.

Superluminal light propagation via quantum interference in decay channels

R. Arun

We examine the propagation of a weak probe light through a coherently driven $\mathsf{Y}\mathsf{\text{\ensuremath{-}}}\mathsf{type}$ system. Under the condition that the excited atomic levels decay via the same vacuum modes, the effects of quantum interference in decay channels are considered. It is found that the interference in decay channels results in a lossless anomalous dispersion between two gain peaks. We demonstrate that the probe pulse propagation can, in principle, be switched from subluminal to superluminal due to the decay-induced interference. We also show that the system exhibits a high index of refraction with negligible absorption for the driving fields. A dressed-state picture of the atom-light interaction is described to explain the numerical results.

Absorption-amplification response with or without spontaneously generated coherence effect in a four-level atomic system

李家华, Wen‐Xing Yang, 彭菊村

We discuss and analyze the absorption properties of a weak probe field in a typical four-level atomic system in the presence of a spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) term. The influences of the SGC and a coherent pump field on the probe absorption-amplification are investigated. The results show that the absorption of such a weak probe field can be dramatically enhanced due to the SGC effect. At the same time, the probe-absorption profile exhibits a two-peak structure and the probe-absorption peak gradually decreases as the pump intensity increases. On the contrary, the amplification of such a weak probe field near the line center of the probe transition can be achieved by adjusting the coherent pump field intensity in the absence of the SGC effect.

Large Enhancement of Probe Amplification with Population Inversion in a Four-Level Atomic System with Vacuum-Induced Coherence

In this paper, we discuss and analyze theoretically probe absorption-amplification response in a four-level coherent atomic system with vacuum-induced coherence via changing the sign of the parameter f , with f denoting the ratio of a pair of dipole moments associated with a doublet of closely upper hyperfine sublevels. We find that the amplitude of the probe amplification for the case f = −1 can be about one order of magnitude larger than that achievable for the case f = 1. In addition, with respect to the case f = −1 the probe amplification can be maintained all the time with weak incoherent pumping for a wide range of the probe detuning.
