Effects of vacuum-induced coherence on dispersion and absorption properties in a tripod-scheme atomic system

Abstract

When the interactions of the two coupling transitions from an excited level to two nearly degenerate ground levels with the same vacuum occur in a four-level tripod-scheme atomic system, vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) results from the quantum interference between the two spontaneous transitions. We investigate the effects of VIC and the relative phase between the two coupling fields on the probe absorption and dispersion properties as well as the group velocity of the probe field. We find that by adjusting the incoherent pumping field and VIC as well as the relative phase, the central absorption peak in the double transparency spectrum reduces, even develops into a gain dip, and the probe field propagates at a velocity from superluminal to subluminal. It is particularly pointed out that the subluminal light propagation with gain without inversion can be realized in such a system. The physical interpretation of the phenomena has been given.

Effect of vacuum-induced coherence on single- and two-photon absorption in a four-level Y-type atomic system

Bang‐Pin Hou, Shun-Jin Wang, W L Yu +1 more

When a four-level $\mathsf{Y}$-type atom with two highest nearly degenerate lying levels interacts with the same vacuum radiation field, its excited levels have vacuum-induced coherence due to the quantum interference between the spontaneous decay channels. We consider the effects of the vacuum-induced coherence on the electromagnetically induced transparency against single- and two-photon absorption in the atomic system. We find that the vacuum-induced coherence can lead to probe gain without incoherent pumping. On the other hand, the coherence can suppress the two-photon transparency, even in some cases where it can enhance the two-photon absorption. Another important result is the finding of the crucial role played by the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields: the two-photon transparency and the probe gain spectra can be modulated by this phase.

VIC Effect and Phase-Dependent Optical Properties of Five-Level K-Type Atoms Interacting with Coherent Laser Fields

Jia Wen-Zhi, Shun-Jin Wang

Due to interaction with the vacuum of the radiation field, a K-type atomic system with near-degenerate excited and ground levels, which is driven by two strong coherent fields and two weak probe fields, has additional coherence terms — the vacuum-induced coherence (VIC) terms. In this paper, we find that, if the interference is optimized, the two-photon absorption properties of this atom system can be significantly modified and electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) is dependent on this interference. Furthermore, we find that in all the cases the coherence can suppress or enhance the partial two-photon transparency, while the complete transparency window is still strictly preserved, which means that it cannot be affected by the VIC. Another important result is the finding of the crucial role played by the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields: the relative height of absorption peaks can be modulated by the relative phase. The physical interpretation of the phenomena has been given.

Vacuum induced interference effect in probe absorption in a driven Y-type atom

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, P.K. Mahapatra

We have analyzed the properties of weak probe absorption in a closed four-level Y -type system driven by a coherent driving field. The system with two nearly degenerate uppermost levels interacting with the same modes of the vacuum radiation field exhibits the interference effect between the spontaneous decay channels. The phenomenon of this quantum interference can significantly change the absorptive response of the weak probe field. On varying the amplitude of the resonant driving field, in the absence of incoherent pumping in the upper transitions the system can display probe transparency as well as enhanced absorption peak under the condition of resonant detuning of the probe field. With the application of incoherent pumping to the system the phenomenon of symmetric light amplification with two distinct gain peaks one each at the positions of Autler–Townes resonances can be achieved in the presence of the decay-interference effect. We have also shown that the unidirectional incoherent pumping mode is necessary for the evolution of probe gain.

Effects of vacuum-induced coherence on single-and two-photon absorption in a four-level inverted Y-type atomic system

Peng Shi

When the transitions connected by two nearly degenerate ground levels with an intermediate level in a four-level inverted Y-type atom interact with the same vacuum radiation field, which will lead to the quantum interference and create the vacuum-induced coherence. We find that the vacuuminduced coherence can suppress the single-and two-photon transparency at resonance and lead to single-photon probe gain at other frequency.Meanwhile,it is shown that the single-and two-photon absorption spectra can be drastically modulated by the relative phase between the probe and coupling fields.

Effect of Doppler broadening on the vacuum induced coherence-dependent probe field absorption in Y-type four-level system

Kening Jia, Liang Ying, Liu Zhong-Bo +2 more

Using the numerical result, the influence of the Doppler broadening on the vacuum induced coherence (VIC) related probe field absorption is discussed. It is shown that if there exists no Doppler broadening, only when VIC is absent can the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon occur; VIC leads the probe field absorption to vary obviously and the gain to appear; in both cases with and without VIC, the absorption curve has a double-peak structure which is symmetrical about the probe detuning. If there exists the Doppler broadening, in both cases with and without VIC, EIT phenomenon can always occur; VIC still leads the probe field absorption to vary obviously and the gain to appear; no matter whether the VIC is present. The probe field absorption has the following characteristics: the absorption curve no longer has symmetry about the probe field detuning and changes gradually from the double-peak structure to the single-peak structure with Doppler broadening width (D) increasing; the probe field absorption does not monotonically increase or decrease with D increasing; the probe field absorption, when the probe and driving fields propagate along the opposite directions, is smaller than that when the probe and driving fields propagate along the same directions.

Group velocity control in a four level system through interacting dark resonances

Kh. Saaidi, S. Dehnar Sydid, S. W. Rabiei

We investigate dispersion and absorption properties of a weak probe field in a four level atomic system through interacting dark resonances. We show that two narrow peaks appears in the optical spectra due to the presence of interacting dark resonances. This two narrow peaks leads to the superluminal light propagation with strong absorption. However, if a weak incoherent pump field is exerted to the probe transition, then the peaks structures can be changed such that two absorption peaks transformed to two gain deeps. We Show that both subluminal and superluminal light propagation occur in this system, where controlled by the incoherent pumping strength.
