Transparency Induced via Decay Interference

Abstract

We demonstrate that decay interference from the two upper levels of a four-level system can lead to loss-free propagation of a single, short laser pulse through an absorbing medium. In contrast to recent investigations of loss-free propagation in three-level media, no second coupling laser pulse is required.

Long distance propagation of resonant pulses under conditions of induced transparency

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Ivan V. Timofeev

Summary form only given. The possibility to render optically thick media transparent for coherent laser radiation via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) gained considerable interest over recent years. Here we study a propagation of two short laser pulses in an absorbing three-level medium under conditions of EIT. We consider two cases: the coherent population trapping (CPT) and the adiabatic population transfer (APT).

Propagation of a laser pulse in a three-level cascade atomic medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Minh Dong Hoang, Van Doai Le, Ngoc Sau Vu +2 more

We study the propagation dynamics of a single pair of probe and coupling laser pulses in a three-level cascade atomic medium by numerical solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations for atoms and fields. Influences of the pulse durations, intensity and pulse area of the coupling laser on the probe laser propagation are investigated. We found the conditions that the undistorted probe pulse in such i.e., the effect is established. Under conditions, the ground state population is trapped in a dark state. Achieving induced transparency with one- and three-photon destructive interference in a two-mode, three-level, double- Λ system

L. Deng, M. G. Payne

We show that in a two-mode, three-level, double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system an efficient multiphoton destructive interference involving one- and three-photon pumping pathways occurs, leading to a unique type of induced transparency. Unlike the conventional electromagnetically induced transparency achieved with a three-state $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system, the induced transparency is critically dependent upon two distinctive relaxation processes involving the production and propagation of an internally generated field. When a two-mode probe field is injected under suitable conditions, we show that the two probe pulses, after a characteristic propagation distance, evolve into a pair of temporal, amplitude, and group velocity matched pulse, traveling loss free in a highly dispersive medium.

Transparency of a short laser pulse via decay interference in a closed V -type system

Emmanuel Paspalakis, Niels J. Kylstra, P. L. Knight

We study the consequences of spontaneous emission interference in the propagation dynamics of a short laser pulse in a closed $\mathsf{V}$-type medium. We show that, under specific conditions, the (otherwise opaque) medium becomes transparent to the laser pulse. The influence of incoherent processes on the transparency is also investigated.
