EFFECT OF MAXIMUM MOMENTUM ON QUANTUM MECHANICAL SCATTERING AND BOUND STATES

Abstract

We construct the exact position representation for a deformed (non-relativistic) quantum mechanics which exhibits an intrinsic maximum momentum and use it to study problems such as a particle in a box and an asymmetric well. In particular, we show that unlike usual quantum mechanics, the present deformed case delays the formation of bound states in a finite potential well, a distinguishing feature that might be relevant for empirical investigations. We also contrast our results with the string-motivated type of deformed quantum mechanics which incorporates a minimum position uncertainty rather than a maximum momentum.

Generalized coherent states under deformed quantum mechanics with maximum momentum

Chee Leong Ching, Wei Khim Ng

Following the Gazeau--Klauder approach, we construct generalized coherent states (GCS) as the quantum simulator to examine the deformed quantum mechanics, which exhibits an intrinsic maximum momentum. We study deformed harmonic oscillators and compute their probability distribution and entropy of states exactly. Also, a particle in an infinite potential box is studied perturbatively. In particular, unlike usual quantum mechanics, the present deformed case increases the entropy of the Planck scale quantum optical system. Furthermore, for simplicity, we obtain the modified uncertainty principle (MUP) with the perturbative treatment up to leading order. MUP turns out to increase generally. However, for certain values of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ (a parameter of GCS), it is possible that the MUP will vanish and hence will exhibit the classical characteristic. This is interpreted as the manifestation of the intrinsic high-momentum cutoff at lower momentum in a perturbative treatment. Although the GCS saturates the minimal uncertainty in a simultaneous measurement of physical position and momentum operators, thus constituting the squeezed states, complete coherency is impossible in quantum gravitational physics. The Mandel Q number is calculated, and it is shown that the statistics can be Poissonian and super-/sub-Poissonian depending on $\ensuremath{\gamma}$. The equation of motion is studied, and both Ehrenfest's theorem and the correspondence principle are recovered. Fractional revival times are obtained through the autocorrelation, and they indicate that the superposition of a classical-like subwave packet is natural in GCS. We also contrast our results with the string-motivated (Snyder) type of deformed quantum mechanics, which incorporates a minimum position uncertainty rather than a maximum momentum. With the advances of quantum optics technology, it might be possible to realize some of these distinguishing quantum-gravitational features within the domain of future experiments.

Exact solution and coherent states of an asymmetric oscillator with position-dependent mass

Bruno G. da Costa, Ignacio S. Gomez, Biswanath Rath

We revisit the problem of the deformed oscillator with position-dependent mass [da Costa et al., J. Math. Phys. 62, 092101 (2021)] in the classical and quantum formalisms by introducing the effect of the mass function in both kinetic and potential energies. The resulting Hamiltonian is mapped into a Morse oscillator by means of a point canonical transformation from the usual phase space (x, p) to a deformed one (xγ, Πγ). Similar to the Morse potential, the deformed oscillator presents bound trajectories in phase space corresponding to an anharmonic oscillatory motion in classical formalism and, therefore, bound states with a discrete spectrum in quantum formalism. On the other hand, open trajectories in phase space are associated with scattering states and continuous energy spectrum. Employing the factorization method, we investigate the properties of the coherent states, such as the time evolution and their uncertainties. A fast localization, classical and quantum, is reported for the coherent states due to the asymmetrical position-dependent mass. An oscillation of the time evolution of the uncertainty relationship is also observed, whose amplitude increases as the deformation increases.

The generalized uncertainty principle within the ordinary framework of quantum mechanics

Y.V. Przhiyalkovskiy

A proper deformation of the underlying coordinate and momentum commutation relations in quantum mechanics provides a phenomenological approach to account for the influence of gravity on small scales. Introducing the squared momentum term results in a generalized uncertainty principle, which limits the minimum uncertainty in particle position to the Planck length. However, such a deformation of the commutator significantly changes the formalism, making it separate from the canonical formalism of quantum mechanics. In this study, it is shown that the deformed algebra of position and momentum operators can be incorporated into the framework of ordinary quantum mechanics.

A Study of Modifications to Quantum Mechanics

Zachary Lewis

In this work, the consequences of several modifications to quantum mechanics are examined. These modifications, motivated by string theory, fall into two categories: ones in which the canonical commutation relations between position and momentum are deformed and ones in which the space of states used are vector spaces over Galois fields instead of complex Hilbert spaces. The particular deformation of the canonical commutation relations used leads to a minimum value of the uncertainty in position which is interpreted as a minimum length scale. Both harmonic and anharmonic oscillators are studied in this framework with normalizable, positive energy eigenstates found in both cases. The quantum uncertainty relations and classical counterparts to these states are discussed. Creating modified quantum theories by replacing the Hilbert spaces of canonical quantum mechanics with vector spaces defined over several finite, Galois fields is accomplished. Correlation functions are calculated in these theories and the maximum values are shown to not behave as would be expected by the standard, Bell-like, bounding inequality theorems. The interpretations and implications of these theories are discussed.

Deformed Heisenberg algebra and its Hilbert space representations

Latévi M. Lawson, Ibrahim Nonkané, Kinvi Kangni

A deformation of Heisenberg algebra induces among other consequences a loss of Hermiticity of some operators that generate this algebra. Therefore, these operators are not Hermitian, nor is the Hamiltonian operator built from them. In the present paper, we propose a position deformation of Heisenberg algebra with both maximal length and minimal momentum uncertainties. By using a pseudo-similarity transformation to the non-Hermitian operators, we prove their Hermiticity with a suitable positive-definite pseudo-metric operator. We then construct Hilbert space representations associated with these pseudo-Hermitian operators. Finally, we study the eigenvalue problem of a free particle in this deformed space and we show that this deformation curved the quantum levels allowing particles to jump from one state to another with low energy transitions.

Minimal length scale in quantum mechanics from a deformation quantization perspective

Ziemowit Domański

Abstract We develop a deformation quantization approach to quantum mechanics that exhibits a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position through the modification of commutation relations for the operators of position and momentum. Deformation quantization is a method of quantizing a classical Hamiltonian system by suitably deforming the Poisson algebra of the system. The developed theory of deformation quantization is non-formal. An appropriate integral formula for the star-product is introduced, along with a suitable space of functions on which the star-product is well defined. A C*-algebra of observables and a space of states are constructed. Moreover, an operator representation in momentum space is presented. Finally, an example of states of maximal localization is given in terms of generalized Wigner functions.
