Abstract

We report the observation of transverse spatial ring structures in the transmitted beam profile using a thin CdS platelet that exhibits increasing-absorption optical bistability. The observed ring structure is in good agreement with our theoretical predictions.

Transverse effects in increasing absorption optical bistability

Theoretical modeling of increasing absorption optical bistability in thin semiconductors has predicted the appearance of transverse spatial rings in the transmitted intensity profiles of an incident Gaussian laser beam.1 The formation of this ring is due to nonuniform switching of the semiconductor in response to the varying beam profile.

Effects of transverse diffusion on increasing absorption bistability

S. W. Koch, Ewan M. Wright

Transverse beam-profile variations are investigated for a system which shows cavityless optical bistability due to increasing absorption. Coupled transport equations for the light field and the excitation density are derived and solved numerically for the case of an optically thin sample, where longitudinal density variations can be neglected and where diffusion of the excitation is the dominant transverse coupling mechanism. Assuming a Gaussian input beam, the increasing absorption is shown to cause substantial profile modifications when the medium undergoes the transition from low to high absorption. The formation of spatial ring structures is predicted and it is shown that transverse carrier diffusion plays an important role in determining both the steady-state and the temporal response of the system.

Giant nonlinearities and low power optical bistability in cadmium sulphide platelets

M. Dagenais

Abstract Both whole-beam and transverse continuous wave optical bistability are observed at milliwatt power levels near the band gap in thin uncoated cadmium sulphide platelets. The whole-beam bistability is free from cavities and requires an absorption coefficient that increases with intensity.

SWITCHING DYNAMICS OF BISTABLE CdS ABSORPTIVE PLATELETS

J.‐Y. Bigot, A. Daunois, Noureddine Cherkaoui Eddeqaqi +3 more

The switching dynamics of thermally induced optical bistability due to increasing absorption is investigated in thin CdS platelets, at room temperature. Fast and slow components can be observed during the switching process, they depend on the holding point intensity and on the switching pulse energy. It is shown that the transverse relaxation of the temperature in the sample influences this dynamics. The spectral shift of the band to band absorption edge, at the origin of the bistable behavior, is observed in a three beam experiment.

We investigate optical bistability in CdS single crystal platelets and related materials either due to electronic or thermal effects, depending on the length of the excitation pulses. An induced absorber in a hybrid ring cavity with cw-input shows self oscillations.
