Differential measurements of Raman coherence and of dynamically interacting excitons in quantum wells

Arthur L. Smirl, Martin J. Stevens, Eric J. Gansen +2 more

Quantum beats involving the light and heavy hole excitons in GaAs quantum wells are studied using both conventional and novel temporally-gated differential detection techniques. The contributions of dynamic exciton-exciton correlations are separated from the nonradiative contributions of Raman coherence by monitoring the signal in the unconventional probe direction and by taking advantage of the polarization selection rules for the excitonic transitions.

Differential measurements of Raman coherence and two-exciton correlations in quantum wells

Quantum beats involving the light-hole and heavy-hole excitons in GaAs quantum wells are studied using both conventional and novel temporally gated differential detection techniques. The contributions of the exciton-exciton correlations are separated from those of the intervalence-band Raman coherence and the interband (population) coherence by monitoring the signal in the probe direction and by taking advantage of the polarization selection rules for the excitonic transitions. The results are shown to be in agreement with a theoretical analysis based on the dynamics-controlled truncation formalism.

Quantum beats of light-hole and heavy-hole excitons in reflection spectra of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well

A. V. Mikhailov, Artur V. Trifonov, O. S. Sultanov +2 more

In this work we experimentally study dynamics of the heavy-hole and light-hole exciton states in a quantum well under coherent excitation of both excitonic resonances using co- and cross-linear and circular polarizations of pump and probe beams. Oscillations of basic parameters of excitonic resonances are observed. Their dependence on the polarization of the pump and probe beams is used to determine the structure of states of the heavy-hole and light-hole excitons by means of theoretical modelling of experimental data. Keywords: quantum well, excitons, quantum beats, light-hole exciton, heavy-hole exciton.

Raman Quantum Beats of Interacting Excitons

Kyle B. Ferrio, Duncan G. Steel

Quantum beats involving the light hole (lh) and heavy hole (hh) excitons in GaAs are observed using homodyne detection of the transient four-wave mixing response. Unlike the beats of earlier studies, these beats are detected in a geometry for which the effect would be forbidden in the absence of exciton interactions and arise from coherence induced between the lh and hh excitons. The beats demonstrate the existence of the Raman coherence due to interaction, and the decay of the coherence shows the correlation of exciton dephasing rates to be relatively unaffected by the interaction.

Coherent signature of differential transmission signals in semiconductors: Theory and experiment

Transient pump-probe signals of a GaAs/${\mathrm{Al}}_{\mathrm{x}}$${\mathrm{Ga}}_{1\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{x}}$As quantum well are investigated both theoretically and experimentally for different excitation conditions. The calculations are based on a microscopic density-matrix approach taking higher-order correlations into account. We present spectrally resolved transients which provide insights into the nature of the differential transmission change. Especially the complex phase signature of heavy-hole--light-hole quantum beats in dependence of the detection energy allows for an identification of different microscopic processes in the pump-probe signal. The theoretical results are verified experimentally by comparison with the coherent and incoherent parts of the time-resolved data. We find a dominant role of the Coulomb-induced correlations up to the ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\chi}}}^{(3)}$ relevant four-point level in the coherent signature in comparison to the Pauli blocking contributions.
