Abstract

A new experimental phenomenon - resonance dip (weakening) of multiphoton ionization in Mg vapor with 3s3p 1 P as an intermediate state has been observed. Photoionization and coherent radiation at 5183. 7Å, accompanied by ionization dip when Mg vapor pressure was high enough, were studied simultaneously as functions of vapor pressure, laser power density and buffer gas pressure. Possible contributions to ionization dip and coherent radiation are discussed.

Resonant dip of two-photon ionisation and stimulated emission in laser-pumped magnesium vapour

Jingyuan Zhang, Zhou Hai-tian, Li Qiong-ru +3 more

An anomalous resonant dip of two-photon ionisation with 3s3p 1 P as an intermediate state and a stimulated emission by the 3s4s 3 S-3s3p 3 P transition, at 518.37 nm following the pulsed laser excitation near the 3s 2 1 S-3s3p 1 P resonance at 285.21 nm in magnesium vapour are observed and studied. The mechanism of the ionisation dip is attributed to formation and predissociation of the A 1 Sigma + u Mg 2 dimer, which transfer the population from the laser-pumped 3s3p 1 P level to 3s3p 3 P levels. Re-excitation of the produced 3s3p 3 P atoms and the subsequent radiative processes are presumed to explain the generation of stimulated emission. A theoretical model is employed to interpret the experimental phenomena.

Unusual three-photon ionization of magnesium atoms using a XeCl excimer laser

S. L. Chin, W. Xiong, K. X. He +1 more

Multiphoton ionization of Mg was studied with an excimer laser (XeCl, λ = 308 nm). The laser-intensity dependence of the number of ions indicates that the lowest-order two-photon process, which has enough energy to reach the first ionization limit, fails to dominate the ionization of Mg. The slope is 3 when a low-enough extracting field is applied and increases with the latter. A three-photon resonance with some autoionizing states is proposed as a partial explanation of this abnormal phenomenon, but the variation of the slope of the log N versus log I curve as a function of a dc electric field remains unexplained.

"Unusual" 3-Photon Ionization Of Mg Atom Using A XeCl Excimer Laser

S. L. Chin, K X. He, Wei-Hao Xiong +1 more

Multiphoton ionisation of Mg was studied with an excimer laser (XeCl, X=308nm). The laser intensity dependence of the number of ions indicates that the lowest order two photon process that have enough energy to reach the first ionisation limit, failed to dominate the ionisation of magnesium for some unknown reason. A 3 photon resonance with some autoionising states was proposed to explain this anormal phenomena.

Stimulated emission in laser-pumped magnesium vapor

Paul D. Kleiber, A. M. Lyyra, Shawn P. Heneghan +1 more

We have observed stimulated emission on the transitions 43S1−33PJ° near 518 nm following pulsed laser excitation of Mg vapor near the 31S0−33P1° resonance at 285 nm. The emission has a divergence similar to the pump laser and closely follows the incident laser in time. The mechanism apparently involves pumping an accidental coincidence 31S0−33P1° and 33PJ°−53DJ, permitting depletion of the lower level of the triplet transition. Photoionization of the Mg vapor creates a large electron density (≲1013 cm−3); electron-impact collisions are presumed to mediate the process, transferring population from the laser-pumped 31P1° level to the triplet manifold.

Generation of UV radiation at 285.4nm by four-wave mixing in magnesium vapor

Yuxin Nie, Zhao Lizeng, LEI ZI-MING +6 more

The generation of UV radiation at 285.4nm by four-wave mixing in magnesium vapor is reported. A dye-laser radiation is focused into magnesium vapor and tuned to the resonance wavelength of the two-photon transition 3s 2 0 S 1 - 3s4s 0 S 1 . The dependence of the signal intensity at 285.4nm on Mg vapor density and incident laser power has been measured and the spectral behaviour has been studied.

Influence of multiphoton ionization on frequency conversion in alkali metal vapors

С. А. Бахрамов, I. G. Kirin, Pulat K. Khabibullaev +1 more

An investigation was made of tunable emission of violet radiation from alkali metal vapors involving a fourphoton process using radiation from a single tunable laser. The influence of ionization of the atoms on the parameters of the emitted radiation was also studied. It was established that as the vapor pressure increases, efficient collisional ionization is observed in addition to resonant three-photon ionization and this may result in complete ionization of the atoms.
