Dynamics of a Large Spin with Strong Dissipation

Abstract

We study the generalization of the spin-boson model to spins greater than one-half in the strong-coupling regime. This model applies to dissipative large spins as well as to ensembles of identical two-state systems coupled to a common environment. Using a combination of polaron transformations and master equations, we find nonexponential spin relaxation towards one of two possible equilibrium states. For Ohmic dissipation the relaxation is approximately logarithmic in time.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

DYNAMICS OF A LARGE-SPIN-BOSON SYSTEM IN THE STRONG COUPLING REGIME

Till Vorrath, Tobias Brandes, Bernhard Krämer

We investigate collective effects of an ensemble of biased two level systems interacting with a bosonic bath in the strong coupling regime. The two level systems are described by a large pseudo-spin J. An equation for the expectation value M(t) of the z-component of the pseudo spin is derived and solved numerically for an ohmic bath at T=0. In case of a large cut-off frequency of the spectral function, a Markov approximation is justified and an analytical solution is presented. We find that M(t) relaxes towards a highly correlated state with maximum value $\pm J$ for large times. However, this relaxation is extremely slow for most parameter values so as if the system was "frozen in" by interaction with the bosonic bath.

Relaxation and Decoherence of Two Strongly Coupled Spin 1/2 Particles

Mio Murao

A quantum statistical model for the relaxation of two strongly coupled spin 1/2 particles toward thermal equilibrium is formulated microscopically using a master equation. Raman-type dissipation mechanisms are introduced in addition to the usual bilinear coupling between the coupled system and the reservoir. The effects of two different rotating wave approximations to derive the master equation are investigated. Decoherence is considered as a process toward thermal equilibrium for the dissipative system and is studied by observing the phase and energy relaxation.

Quantum Dissipative Dynamics of Entanglement in the Spin-Boson Model

Jong Soo Lim, Mahn‐Soo Choi, M. Y. Choi

We study quantum dissipative dynamics of entanglement in the spin-boson model, described by the generalized master equation. We consider the two opposite limits of pure-dephasing and relaxation models, measuring the degree of entanglement with the concurrence. When the Markovian approximation is employed, entanglement is shown to decay exponentially in both cases. On the other hand, non-Markovian contributions alter the analytic structure of the master equation, resulting in logarithmic decay in the pure dephasing model.

Quench dynamics of a dissipative quantum system: A renormalization group study

Oleksiy Kashuba, Dante Marvin Kennes, Mikhail Pletyukhov +2 more

We study dissipation in a small quantum system coupled to an environment held in thermodynamic equilibrium. The relaxation dynamics of a system subject to an abrupt quench in the parameters of the underlying Hamiltonian is investigated using two complementary renormalization group approaches. The methods are applied to the Ohmic spin-boson model close to the coherent-to-incoherent transition. In particular, the role of non-Markovian memory for the relaxation before and after the quench of the spin-boson coupling and the Zeeman splitting of the up and down spin is investigated.
