Abstract

We study quantum dissipative dynamics of entanglement in the spin-boson model, described by the generalized master equation. We consider the two opposite limits of pure-dephasing and relaxation models, measuring the degree of entanglement with the concurrence. When the Markovian approximation is employed, entanglement is shown to decay exponentially in both cases. On the other hand, non-Markovian contributions alter the analytic structure of the master equation, resulting in logarithmic decay in the pure dephasing model.

Spin-boson model under dephasing: Markovian versus non-Markovian dynamics

Naushad Ahmad Kamar, Daniel A. Paz, Mohammad F. Maghrebi

The spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath, is extensively studied as a paradigmatic dissipative quantum system, exhibiting rich dynamical behavior and even a localization transition in the strong coupling regime. Here, we additionally consider dephasing as a source of Markovian dissipation on top of the non-Markovian dynamics due to an Ohmic bath, and investigate the dynamics of the spin. We show that the characteristic frequency of the spin dynamics, while strongly renormalized by the bosonic bath, changes in a simple fashion (or does not change at all) with dephasing. To obtain these results, we develop an exact nonperturbative method known as the stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, mimicking the Ohmic bath via a stochastic magnetic field combined with the Lindblad quantum master equation due to dephasing, which allows us to numerically compute the dynamics. Furthermore, we derive weak-coupling analytic results utilizing the well-known noninteracting blip approximation. Our findings are relevant to quantum simulation of the spin-boson model in the regime of strong coupling in trapped ions and circuit QED architectures among others.

Non-Markovian decoherence and disentanglement scenarios in quantum Brownian motion

Christian Hörhammer, H. Buettner

We study the non-Markovian decoherence and disentanglement dynamics of dissipative quantum systems with special emphasis on non-Gaussian continuous variable systems. The dynamics are described by the Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation of quantum Brownian motion. The time evolution of the decoherence function of a single-mode superposition is compared to the concurrence of a two-mode entangled state. It is verified that moderate non-Markovian influences slow down the decay of interference fringes and quantum correlations, while strong non-Markovian effects resulting from an out-of-resonance bath can even accelerate the loss of coherence, compared to predictions of Markovian approximations. Qualitatively different scenarios including exponential, Gaussian or algebraic decay of the decoherence function are analyzed. It is shown that partial revivals of coherence can occur in case of non-Lindblad-type dynamics.

Geometric phases and quantum correlations dynamics in spin-boson model

Wei Wu, Jing‐Bo Xu

We explore the dynamics of spin-boson model for the Ohmic bath by employing the master equation approach and obtain an explicit expression of reduced density matrix. We also calculate the geometric phases of the spin-boson model by making use of the analytical results and discuss how the dissipative bosonic environment affects geometric phases. Furthermore, we investigate the dynamics of quantum discord and entanglement of two qubits each locally interacting with its own independent bosonic environments. It is found that the decay properties of quantum discord and entanglement are sensitive to the choice of initial state's parameter and coupling strength between system and bath.

Quantum oscillations in the spin-boson model: reduced visibility from non-Markovian effects and initial entanglement

Frank K. Wilhelm

The loss of coherence of quantum oscillations is of fundamental interest as well as of practical importance in quantum computing. In solid-state experiments the oscillations show, next to the familiar exponential decay on time scales T 1/2 , an overall loss of amplitude. We solve the spin-boson model for a large class of initial conditions without the Markov approximation at the pure dephasing point. It is shown that a loss of visibility occurs in the form of a fast initial drop for factorized initial conditions and an overall reduction for entangled initial conditions. This loss of amplitude is distinct from T 2 -decoherence with the difference being most drastic for environments with real or pseudo-gaps. This result is explained by bandwidth effects in quantum noise as well as in terms of higher order phase-breaking processes. For several experiments, such gapped environments are identified. We confirm that this physics is valid beyond the pure dephasing point.

On the validity of non-Markovian master equation approaches for the entanglement dynamics of two-qubit systems

Elena Ferraro, M. Scala, Rosanna Migliore +1 more

In the framework of the dissipative dynamics of coupled qubits interacting with independent reservoirs, a comparison between non-Markovian master equation techniques and an exact solution is presented here. We study various regimes in order to find the limits of validity of the Nakajima–Zwanzig and the time-convolutionless master equations in the description of the entanglement dynamics. A comparison between the performances of the concurrence and the negativity as entanglement measures for the system under study is also presented.
