Superspace geometry: the exact uncertainty relationship between complementary aspects

Abstract

After reviewing the standard uncertainty relations due to Heisenberg (1927), Robertson (1929), and Schrodinger (1930), as well as the relations of Deutsch, and of Maassen and Uffink-including the so-called entropic relations-the author presents a complete account of the uncertainty relationship between complementary aspects in terms of superspace geometry, an approach not hitherto employed. Two incompatible properties A= Sigma alpha A alpha mod alpha )( alpha mod and N= Sigma n N n mod n)(n mod belong to a pair of complementary aspects defined by two orthonormal bases ( mod alpha )) and ( mod n)) in the Hilbert space H. If the state is mod psi >, then P( alpha )= mod ( alpha mod psi ) mod 2 is the probability of obtaining the value A alpha in a measurement of A, and P(n)= mod (n mod psi ) mod 2 is the probability of obtaining the value N n in a measurement of N. The two aspects are characterised, relative to mod psi ), by the numbers (so-called purities): pi = Sigma alpha P( alpha ) 2 and pi = Sigma n P(n) 2 , both <or=1. He gives a complete characterisation of the uncertainty relationship between A and N (more precisely: between their aspects) in terms of the range of joint values of ( pi , pi ) for arbitrary initial states (pure as well as mixed). A theorem of Lenard is given an alternative proof, employing only elementary (superspace) geometry. The results depend on two angles, phi m =minimal angle, and phi M =maximal angle between the two aspects. Exact expressions for phi m and phi M are obtained in terms of the overlap matrix Lambda =( Lambda alpha n )=( mod ( alpha mod n) mod 2 ). As a corollary he finds the uncertainty relation for a pure state mod psi ) pi + pi <or= 1+1/g+1-1/g cos phi m (where g=dim H), and a sharper one for mixed states. pi + pi = 2 is obtainable if and only if the intersection of the aspects holds a pure state. If phi m = pi /2 (maximal incompatibility), then pi + pi <or= 1+1/g is a special case of a stronger relation: Sigma mu g =o pi ( mu ) =2, which one obtains for g+1 maximally incompatible aspects by means of a thereom of Ivanovic.

Hopf Fibration Unifies Qubit Geometry, Entanglement, and Tetrahedral Angle — E8 Intelligence Research

Andrew Stewart Caldin

FINDING: The Hopf fibration (S³→S² with S¹ fibers) is the geometric backbone linking qubit state spaces, quantum entanglement topology, and the tetrahedral angle arccos(-1/3) — with the rotation-angle holonomy of a disc emerging from its fibration structure. | MATH: Hopf map: S¹ ↪ S³ → S², fiber S¹; qubit Bloch sphere = S², state space S³; tetrahedral angle θ = arccos(-1/3) ≈ 109.47° (cos θ = -1/3); holonomy angle φ = 2π(1 - cos α) for a disc tilted by α (from arXiv:2512.04481v2); entanglement measure for two qubits: concurrence C = |⟨ψ|σ_y⊗σ_y|ψ*⟩|, related to Hopf invariants. | CONNECTION: arccos(-1/3) is the dihedral angle of the regular tetrahedron — the root system A₃ (crystallographic, rank 3, Weyl group S₄). The Hopf fibration's base S² and fiber S¹ encode the SU(2) → SO(3) double cover, whose holonomy yields the 2:1 spin-geometry ratio (2.000, not golden, but exact). The tetrahedral angle's cosine -1/3 appears in the Hopf invariant's integer values (linking number of fibers). N Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Complementary observables and uncertainty relations

K. Kraus

Two observables A and B of an n-level system (i.e., a quantum system with n-dimensional state space) are called complementary, if knowledge of the measured value of A implies maximal uncertainty of the measured value of B, and vice versa. Such observables exist for all n, but no classification (up to equivalence) of all possible pairs of complementary observables is known except for n\ensuremath{\le}4. Complementary observables are conjectured to satisfy an ``entropic'' uncertainty relation of the strongest possible form. This relation has been verified for n\ensuremath{\le}4 by explicit calculations. A recent attempt of substantiating the widespread interpretation of uncertainty relations in terms of mutual disturbances between measurements is criticized.

Exact uncertainty relations

Michael J. W. Hall

The Heisenberg inequality $\ensuremath{\Delta}X\ensuremath{\Delta}P>~\ensuremath{\Elzxh}/2$ can be replaced by an exact equality, for suitably chosen measures of position and momentum uncertainty, which is valid for all wave functions. The statistics of complementary observables are thus connected by an ``exact'' uncertainty relation. Results may be generalized to angular momentum and phase, photon number and phase, time and frequency, and to states described by density operators. Connections to energy bounds, entanglement, Wigner functions, and optimal estimation of an observable from the measurement of a second observable are also given.

Beyond Landau–Pollak and entropic inequalities: Geometric bounds imposed on uncertainties sums

Steeve Zozor, G. M. Bosyk, M. Portesi +2 more

In this paper we propose generalized inequalities to quantify the uncertainty principle. We deal with two observables with finite discrete spectra described by positive operator-valued measures (POVM) and with systems in mixed states. Denoting by p(A;ρ) and p(B;ρ) the probability vectors associated with observables A and B when the system is in the state ρ, we focus on relations of the form Uα(p(A;ρ))+Uβ(p(B;ρ))≥Bα,β(A,B) where Uλ is a measure of uncertainty and B is a non-trivial state-independent bound for the uncertainty sum. We propose here: (i) an extension of the usual Landau–Pollak inequality for uncertainty measures of the form Uf(p(A;ρ)) = f(maxipi(A;ρ)) issued from well suited metrics; our generalization comes out as a consequence of the triangle inequality. The original Landau–Pollak inequality initially proved for nondegenerate observables and pure states, appears to be the most restrictive one in terms of the maximal probabilities; (ii) an entropic formulation for which the uncertainty measure is based on generalized entropies of Rényi or Havrda–Charvát–Tsallis type: Ug,α(p(A;ρ)) = g(Σi[pi(A;ρ)]α)1−α. Our approach is based on Schur-concavity considerations and on previously derived Landau–Pollak type inequalities.

General entropy-like uncertainty relations in finite dimensions

Steeve Zozor, Bosyk, Gustavo Martin, Portesi, Mariela Adelina

We revisit entropic formulations of the uncertainty principle (UP) for an arbitrary pair of positive operator-valued measures (POVM) A and B, acting on finite dimensional Hilbert space. Salicrú generalized (h,ϕ ) -entropies, including Rényi and Tsallis ones among others, are used as uncertainty measures associated with the distribution probabilities corresponding to the outcomes of the observables. We obtain a nontrivial lower bound for the sum of generalized entropies for any pair of entropic functionals, which is valid for both pure and mixed states. The bound depends on the overlap triplet (cA, cB, cA,B) with cA (respectively cB) being the overlap between the elements of the POVM A (respectively B) and cA B, the overlap between the pair of POVM. Our approach is inspired by that of de Vicente and Sánchez-Ruiz (2008 Phys. Rev. A 77 042110) and consists in a minimization of the entropy sum subject to the Landau–Pollak inequality that links the maximum probabilities of both observables. We solve the constrained optimization problem in a geometrical way and furthermore, when dealing with Rényi or Tsallis entropic formulations of the UP, we overcome the Hölder conjugacy constraint imposed on the entropic indices by the Riesz–Thorin theorem. In the case of nondegenerate observables, we show that for given cA B, > 1/2 , the bound obtained is optimal; and that, for Rényi entropies, our bound improves Deutsch one, but Maassen–Uffink bound prevails when cA B, ⩽ 1/2 . Finally, we illustrate by comparing our bound with known previous results in particular cases of Rényi and Tsallis entropies.
