Abstract

We report on using temporal compensation to improve the entanglement from two-crystal type-I pulsed, cw-diode and LED sources, using both BBO and BiBO. The fidelity of these sources can be further increased by spatially compensation.

Optimizing type-I polarization-entangled photons

Radhika Rangarajan, M. E. Goggin, Paul G. Kwiat

Optical quantum information processing needs ultra-bright sources of entangled photons, especially from synchronizable femtosecond lasers and low-cost cw-diode lasers. Decoherence due to timing information and spatial mode-dependent phase has traditionally limited the brightness of such sources. We report on a variety of methods to optimize type-I polarization-entangled sources--the combined use of different compensation techniques to engineer high-fidelity pulsed and cw-diode laser-pumped sources, as well as the first production of polarization-entanglement directly from the highly nonlinear biaxial crystal BiB(3)O(6) (BiBO). Using spatial compensation, we show more than a 400-fold improvement in the phase flatness, which otherwise limits efficient collection of entangled photons from BiBO, and report the highest fidelity to date (99%) of any ultrafast polarization-entanglement source. Our numerical code, available on our website, can design optimal compensation crystals and simulate entanglement from a variety of type-I phasematched nonlinear crystals.

Phase-compensated ultra-bright source of entangled photons

Joseph B. Altepeter, Evan R. Jeffrey, Paul G. Kwiat

While the most direct method to increase the brightness of a type-I entanglement source is to increase the collected solid angle of the down-conversion, this leads to effective decoherence caused by an angle-dependent phase shift. Using specially designed compensation crystals, we have reversed this effect and created the brightest source of entangled photons to date, over two million measured pairs per second, recorded while measuring the largest reported violation of Bell's inequality (1239 sigma).

Increasing the correlation level of polarization entangled photon pairs generated by type-II SPDC in BBO

Csaba Tamás Holló, Gábor Erdei, Tamás Sarkadi

Entangled photon sources introduce phase shift between polarization states. Exceeding coherence length, coincidence rate drops for certain bases. Correlation is restored by phase compensation. Applying anisotropic retarders coincidence rate doubles.

High-Flux Entanglement Sources using Periodically-Poled Nonlinear Crystals

Marius A. Albotǎ, Friedrich König, Christopher E. Kuklewicz +4 more

Entangled photons are essential in many quantum information applications such as quantum communications, implementation of quantum computation algorithms, and cryptographic key distributions. Typically UV-pumped optical parametric downconversion in a thin angle-phase-matched beta barium borate (BBO) crystal produces spatially-separated, entangled photon pairs that are emitted in a cone.

The biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB_3O_6 as a polarization entangled photon source using non-collinear type-II parametric down-conversion

A. Halevy, E. Megidish, L. Dovrat +3 more

We describe the full characterization of the biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB₃O₆ (BiBO) as a polarization entangled photon source using non-collinear type-II parametric down-conversion. We consider the relevant parameters for crystal design, such as cutting angles, polarization of the photons, effective nonlinearity, spatial and temporal walk-offs, crystal thickness and the effect of the pump laser bandwidth. Experimental results showing entanglement generation with high rates and a comparison to the well investigated β-BaB₂O₄ (BBO) crystal are presented as well. Changing the down-conversion crystal of a polarization entangled photon source from BBO to BiBO enhances the generation rate as if the pump power was increased by 2.5 times. Such an improvement is currently required for the generation of multiphoton entangled states.
