Abstract

We describe the full characterization of the biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB₃O₆ (BiBO) as a polarization entangled photon source using non-collinear type-II parametric down-conversion. We consider the relevant parameters for crystal design, such as cutting angles, polarization of the photons, effective nonlinearity, spatial and temporal walk-offs, crystal thickness and the effect of the pump laser bandwidth. Experimental results showing entanglement generation with high rates and a comparison to the well investigated β-BaB₂O₄ (BBO) crystal are presented as well. Changing the down-conversion crystal of a polarization entangled photon source from BBO to BiBO enhances the generation rate as if the pump power was increased by 2.5 times. Such an improvement is currently required for the generation of multiphoton entangled states.

CALCULATION OF EFFECTIVE NONLINEAR COEFFICIENT IN BIBO FOR SPONTANEOUS PARAMETRIC DOWN CONVERSION

Guangwen Huo, Tongyi Zhang, Guanghua Cheng +1 more

We theoretically investigate the effective nonlinear coefficient d eff of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process in biaxial nonlinear crystal BiB3O6 (BIBO). We solve the Fresnel equations in the collinear degenerate down-converted configuration, and get the relations of phase-matching angles. Considering the double phase-matching, we compute the phase-matching angles with different wavelength. Furthermore, we simplify the expression of effective nonlinear coefficient out of the principal planes, and numerically calculate it varying with the angle and wavelength. These results indicate that there are three effective phase-matching schemes for SPDC which can be used to construct a system to generate entangled photon pairs.

Optimizing the phase-matching parameters of a BIBO crystal for ultrafast spontaneous parametric down conversion

Guang-Wen Huo, Tongyi Zhang, Ren-Gang Wan +3 more

We analyze and optimize the parameters of the Type I spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) process in BiB3O6 (BIBO) crystal directly from calculations. This can be used to construct a system to generate ultrafast entangled photon pairs, which play an important role in quantum communication, quantum positioning, and quantum clock synchronization. Our work on the problem makes it clear that the optimal phase matching orientation in the process of SPDC is a key mechanism in the BIBO crystal in a way that appears not to have been appreciated before. In the case of ω = 0.405 μm , the numerical results of the optimization parameters at room temperature ( 295 K ) are:θ = 152.00° ,φ = 90° , and d eff = 3.48 pm/V . Finally, we use a pair of 0.6 mm thick biaxial BIBO crystals to construct an ultrafast entangled photon source, where the crystals are stacked together perpendicularly and pumped by a 405 nm pulsed laser doubling from a Tsunami mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser.

Numerical Investigation of High-Purity Entangled Photon-Pair Generation in Ba3Mg3(BO3)3F3 Crystals

Donghwa Lee, Ilhwan Kim, Kwang Jo Lee

We investigate the high-purity entangled photon pair generation in a recently developed borate crystal, Ba3Mg3(BO3)3F3. The technique is based on the spontaneous parametric down-conversion under the extended phase matching (EPM), where the phase matching and the group velocity matching between the interacting photons are satisfied simultaneously in bulk crystals with point symmetry of orthorhombic mm2 (thus showing biaxial birefringence). We will discuss all the theoretical aspects required for the generation of photon pairs in mm2 biaxial crystals, which are much more complex than the cases of uniaxial crystals (e.g., β-BaB2O4 and LiNbO3) and periodically poled crystals that are widely used in the field. Our study includes theoretical and numerical investigations of two types of EPM and their corresponding effective nonlinearities and spatial walk-offs. The results show that two types of EPM are satisfied over the specific range in the direction of pump wave vector, corresponding to its spectral ranges of 876.15–1052.77 nm for Type I and 883.92–914.33 nm for Type II. The joint spectral analyses show that photon-pairs can be generated with high purities of 0.997 with a proper pump filtering (for Type II), and 0.833 even without pump filtering (for Type I).

Non-collinear and non-degenerate polarization-entangled photon generation via concurrent type-I parametric downconversion in PPLN

Hugues Guillet de Chatellus, Alexander V. Sergienko, Bahaa E. A. Saleh +2 more

A periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal has been used as an efficient source of non-collinearly generated polarization-entangled photon pairs at 810 and 1550 nm. The PPLN crystal was endowed with a specially designed poling pattern and the entangled photons were generated via the nonlinear optical process of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC). A novel design based on overlapping two concurrent type-I quasi-phase-matching structures in a single PPLN crystals produced correlated pairs of alternatively polarized photons in largely separated spectral regions. The phase of the resulting two-photon state is directly linked to parameters of the nonlinear grating. Continuous tunability of the generated Bell state, from Phi(+) to Phi(-), has been demonstrated by translating a slightly wedged crystal perpendicular to the pump beam.

Optimizing type-I polarization-entangled photons

Radhika Rangarajan, M. E. Goggin, Paul G. Kwiat

Optical quantum information processing needs ultra-bright sources of entangled photons, especially from synchronizable femtosecond lasers and low-cost cw-diode lasers. Decoherence due to timing information and spatial mode-dependent phase has traditionally limited the brightness of such sources. We report on a variety of methods to optimize type-I polarization-entangled sources--the combined use of different compensation techniques to engineer high-fidelity pulsed and cw-diode laser-pumped sources, as well as the first production of polarization-entanglement directly from the highly nonlinear biaxial crystal BiB(3)O(6) (BiBO). Using spatial compensation, we show more than a 400-fold improvement in the phase flatness, which otherwise limits efficient collection of entangled photons from BiBO, and report the highest fidelity to date (99%) of any ultrafast polarization-entanglement source. Our numerical code, available on our website, can design optimal compensation crystals and simulate entanglement from a variety of type-I phasematched nonlinear crystals.
