Abstract

We consider quantum dynamics of a parametrically driven anharmonic oscillator (PDAO) at a few-photon level. In this scheme the oscillatory mode is excited through the degenerate down-conversion process. This scheme could be experimentally realized in superconducting solid-state devices based on the nonlinearity of the Josephson junction or in cooled nano-mechanical oscillators. We investigate PDAO in the strong quantum regime that means strong Kerr-nonlinearity of the mode with respect to the mode’s dissipation for two cases of excitations: by a monochromatic driving field or by a train of Gaussian pulses. We demonstrate production of the nonclassical oscillatory states with two-fold symmetry in phase-space which are approximately close to the lower pure Fock states. Production of the superposition of the Fock states for time-intervals exceeding the characteristic time of decoherence and dissipation is also shown.

Engineering of oscillatory quantum states by parametric excitation

T. V. Gevorgyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We consider preparation of nonclassical oscillatory states in a degenerate parametric oscillator combined with phase modulation. In this scheme intracavity oscillatory mode is excited by train of Gaussian laser pulses through degenerate down-conversion process and phase modulation element inserted in a cavity leads to anharmonicity of oscillatory mode. We demonstrate production of nonclassical oscillatory states with two-fold symmetry in phase-space including the superposition of Fock states and quantum localized states on the level of few excitation numbers and in over-transient dissipative regime.

Generation of Fock states and qubits in periodically pulsed nonlinear oscillators

T. V. Gevorgyan, A. R. Shahinyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We demonstrate a quantum regime of dissipative nonlinear oscillators where the creation of Fock states as well as the superpositions of Fock states are realized for time intervals exceeding the characteristic decoherence time. The preparation of quantum states is conditioned by strong Kerr nonlinearity as well as by excitation of resolved lower oscillatory energy levels with a specific train of Gaussian pulses. This provides practical signatures to look for in experiments with cooled nonlinear oscillators.

Phase locking and quantum statistics in a parametrically driven nonlinear resonator

G. H. Hovsepyan, A. R. Shahinyan, Lock Yue Chew +1 more

We discuss phase-locking phenomenon at low-level of quanta and quantum statistics for parametrically driven nonlinear Kerr resonator (PDNR). Oscillatory mode of PDNR is created in the process of a degenerate down-conversion of photons under interaction with a train of external Gaussian pulses. We calculate the distribution of photon-number states, the second-order correlation function of photons, the Wigner functions of cavity mode showing two-fold symmetry in phase space, and we analyze formation of phase-locked states in the regular as well as the quantum chaotic regime of the PDNR.

Parametric excitation of oscillatory states and symmetry in phase space

T. V. Gevorgyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We study the excitation of nonlinear dissipative oscillator under influence of a monochromatic force at the level of a few quanta. With this purpose we consider an optical parametric oscillator combined with phase-modulation in which the oscillatory mode is excited through down-conversion process under a monochromatic laser field. The temporal Rabi oscillations of Fock states as well as the properties of oscillatory mode in phase space are studied with use of the Wigner functions.

Chaos due to parametric excitation: phase space symmetry and photon correlations

T. V. Gevorgyan, G. H. Hovsepyan, A. R. Shahinyan +1 more

We discuss dissipative chaos showing symmetries in the phase space and nonclassical statistics for a parametrically driven nonlinear Kerr resonator (PDNR). In this system an oscillatory mode is created in the process of degenerate down-conversion of photons under interaction with a train of external Gaussian pulses. For chaotic regime we demonstrate, that the Poincaré section showing a strange attractor, as well as the resonator mode contour plots of the Wigner functions display two-fold symmetry in the phase space. We show that quantum-to-classical correspondence is strongly violated for some chaotic regimes of the PDNR. Considering the second-order correlation function we show that the high-level of photons correlation leading to squeezing in the regular regime strongly decreases if the system transits to the chaotic regime. Thus, observation of the photon-number correlation allows to extract information about the chaotic regime.

Few-photon degenerate parametric resonance in a two-tone driven microwave resonator

Orjan Ameye, Jakob Koenig, Clinton Potts +2 more

Multi-tone external driving offers a route to parametric physics without directly modulating the device. However, the validity of the parametric response in the few-photon regime remains underexplored. Here, we apply two coherent microwave tones to a Josephson-junction Kerr oscillator and stimulate degenerate parametric downconversion via four-wave mixing. Using transmission spectroscopy, we observe that the response retains the qualitative semiclassical Kerr parametric oscillator structure, including its instability lobe and bistable phase-space topology. Interestingly, we demonstrate that a conventional single-mode reduction fails to capture the system quantitatively: the predicted AC Stark shift is severely underestimated, and the reported distributions might not be fully physical when the single-photon Kerr shift $K$ exceeds the cavity linewidth $κ$. Instead, we show that a full three-tone quantum description accurately reproduces the experimental observables. There, quantum fluctuations of the drive tones become dynamically dominant over dissipation, and all three interacting tones operate in a deep few-photon limit where the expected semiclassical macroscopic lobes undergo fundamental renormalization due to profound mixing with quantum variance. Our results establish two-tone-driven Kerr oscillators as potential parametric amplifiers and open new horizons to explore the quantum-to-classical crossover in driven-dissipative circuits.
