Abstract

We discuss phase-locking phenomenon at low-level of quanta and quantum statistics for parametrically driven nonlinear Kerr resonator (PDNR). Oscillatory mode of PDNR is created in the process of a degenerate down-conversion of photons under interaction with a train of external Gaussian pulses. We calculate the distribution of photon-number states, the second-order correlation function of photons, the Wigner functions of cavity mode showing two-fold symmetry in phase space, and we analyze formation of phase-locked states in the regular as well as the quantum chaotic regime of the PDNR.

Chaos due to parametric excitation: phase space symmetry and photon correlations

We discuss dissipative chaos showing symmetries in the phase space and nonclassical statistics for a parametrically driven nonlinear Kerr resonator (PDNR). In this system an oscillatory mode is created in the process of degenerate down-conversion of photons under interaction with a train of external Gaussian pulses. For chaotic regime we demonstrate, that the Poincaré section showing a strange attractor, as well as the resonator mode contour plots of the Wigner functions display two-fold symmetry in the phase space. We show that quantum-to-classical correspondence is strongly violated for some chaotic regimes of the PDNR. Considering the second-order correlation function we show that the high-level of photons correlation leading to squeezing in the regular regime strongly decreases if the system transits to the chaotic regime. Thus, observation of the photon-number correlation allows to extract information about the chaotic regime.

Parametrically driven nonlinear oscillator at a few-photon level

T. V. Gevorgyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We consider quantum dynamics of a parametrically driven anharmonic oscillator (PDAO) at a few-photon level. In this scheme the oscillatory mode is excited through the degenerate down-conversion process. This scheme could be experimentally realized in superconducting solid-state devices based on the nonlinearity of the Josephson junction or in cooled nano-mechanical oscillators. We investigate PDAO in the strong quantum regime that means strong Kerr-nonlinearity of the mode with respect to the mode’s dissipation for two cases of excitations: by a monochromatic driving field or by a train of Gaussian pulses. We demonstrate production of the nonclassical oscillatory states with two-fold symmetry in phase-space which are approximately close to the lower pure Fock states. Production of the superposition of the Fock states for time-intervals exceeding the characteristic time of decoherence and dissipation is also shown.

Bistability and chaos at low levels of quanta

T. V. Gevorgyan, A. R. Shahinyan, Lock Yue Chew +1 more

We study nonlinear phenomena of bistability and chaos at a level of few quanta. For this purpose, we consider a single-mode dissipative oscillator with strong Kerr nonlinearity with respect to the dissipation rate driven by a monochromatic force as well as by a train of Gaussian pulses. The quantum effects and decoherence in the oscillatory mode are investigated in the framework of the purity of states and the Wigner functions calculated from the master equation. We demonstrate the quantum chaotic regime by means of a comparison between the contour plots of the Wigner functions and the strange attractors on the classical Poincaré section. Considering bistability at a low limit of quanta, we analyze the minimal level of excitation numbers at which the bistable regime of the system is displayed. We also discuss the formation of an oscillatory chaotic regime by varying oscillatory excitation numbers at ranges of a few quanta. We demonstrate quantum-interference phenomena that are assisted hysteresis-cycle behavior and quantum chaos for the oscillator driven by a train of Gaussian pulses. We establish the border of quantum-classical correspondence for chaotic regimes in the case of strong nonlinearities.

Parametric excitation of oscillatory states and symmetry in phase space

T. V. Gevorgyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We study the excitation of nonlinear dissipative oscillator under influence of a monochromatic force at the level of a few quanta. With this purpose we consider an optical parametric oscillator combined with phase-modulation in which the oscillatory mode is excited through down-conversion process under a monochromatic laser field. The temporal Rabi oscillations of Fock states as well as the properties of oscillatory mode in phase space are studied with use of the Wigner functions.

Kerr Induced Control of Synchronization and Quantum State Recovery in a Driven van der Pol Oscillator

Amir Hossein Houshmand Almani, Ali Mortezapour, Alireza Nourmandipour

We investigate how Kerr nonlinearity modifies quantum synchronization in a squeezed quantum van der Pol oscillator. We show that the Kerr interaction produces an amplitude-dependent frequency shift that drives a saddle-node bifurcation, transforming the classical phase-space structure from bistable to monostable dynamics. In the quantum regime, this transition manifests as systematic frequency pulling and spectral broadening, while the steady-state Wigner function reveals a continuous correspondence between the quantum state and the semiclassical attractor despite finite quantum fluctuations. By constructing global synchronization phase diagrams in the squeezing--Kerr parameter space, we uncover a remarkably linear dependence of the critical squeezing strength required to maintain phase locking on the Kerr nonlinearity. We further demonstrate that the synchronization boundary does not coincide with the crossover between super- and sub-Poissonian photon statistics, showing that synchronization and photon-number statistics characterize distinct aspects of the quantum steady state. These results provide quantitative design principles for controlling quantum synchronization through Kerr nonlinearity, with potential relevance to trapped-ion, superconducting-circuit, and optomechanical platforms.

Quantum coherence and classical chaos in a pulsed parametric oscillator with a Kerr nonlinearity

Gerard J Milburn, Catherine A. Holmes

We consider a parametric amplifier driven by a periodically pulsed pump field inside a cavity containing a Kerr nonlinearity. The dynamics of the device is modeled as a kicked nonlinear system. The pulsed parametric amplifier constitutes the kick. In between kicks the dynamics is determined by the Kerr nonlinearity and damping. In the absence of damping, a classical description of the device exhibits a rich phase-space structure including fixed points of multiple period and chaos. We contrast the classical behavior of the mean intensity with that predicted by quantum dynamics. The mean photon number inside the cavity is shown to undergo regular collapse and revival in the regular region of the phase space and irregular revivals in the chaotic region. When damping is included, the quantum recurrences are rapidly suppressed, and the classical behavior is restored. In this case a stable steady state is possible. The damping represents the effect of photon-number measurements on the system. We also discuss the photon statistics in the steady state.
