METAL-INSULATOR TRANSITION IN THE HUBBARD MODEL

Abstract

We study the metal-insulator transition of the d-dimensional Hubbard model by treating the hopping term between adjacent 1-d chains in the frame of a Clifford linearization scheme, and keeping the full model along the chains. A general equation for the critical point is worked out in terms of the correlation functions of the one-dimensional model, assuming that the transition is of the second order. The equation, which holds at any temperature, is here investigated especially at T=0, where the latter condition holds true. The solution shows the existence of an insulating ground state in any d only at half-filling for U strictly positive, as in the exact 1-d case. The transition is found to be related to a parameter reminiscent of entropy.

Classical Linear-Chain Hubbard Model: Metal-Insulator Transition

Robert A. Bari

The linear-chain Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping parameter $t$ is reexpressed in terms of pseudospin operators according to the Jordan-Wigner transformation. The resulting spin model is then treated classically. It is found that for a half-filled band there is a phase transition in the ground state as a function of $t$. The electrical conductivity is calculated and shown to vanish discontinuously at the critical value of $4t = U$ (Coulomb repulsion). A Josephson-type relation is obtained between the difference in azimuthal angles of adjacent spins and the potential difference between sites. It is also shown that a local magnetic moment exists in the insulating state. For the non-half-filled band, it is shown that the ground state is ferromagnetic for $4t < U$.

THE METAL–INSULATOR TRANSITION IN THE HUBBARD MODEL AT ZERO TEMPERATURE II

Marcelo J. Rozenberg, Goetz Moeller, Gabriel Kotliar

We study the metal-to-insulator transition of the Hubbard model at zero temperatures in infinite dimensions. The coexistence of metallic and insulating solutions for a finite range of the interaction is established. It is shown that the metallic solution is lower in energy for any interaction in the coexistence region and that the transition is of second order.

Metal-Insulator Transition in a Generalized Hubbard Model with Correlated Hopping at Half-Filling

L. Didukh, V. Hankevych

In the present paper the metal–insulator transition is studied in a generalized Hubbard model with correlated hopping at half-filling and zero temperature. Single-particle Green function and energy spectrum of the electron system are calculated. The expressions for the energy gap width and the concentration of polar states (holes or doublons) are obtained. The conditions for metallic and insulating states are found.

Single-particle spectral function of a generalized Hubbard model: Metal-insulator transition

Eduardo R. Gagliano, Armando A. Aligia, Liliana Arrachea +1 more

A generalized Hubbard model with correlated hoppings is studied at half filling using exact diagonalization methods. For certain values of the hopping parameters our results for several static properties, the Drude weight and the single-particle spectra function, suggest the occurrence of a metal-insulator transition (MIT) at a finite value of the local Coulomb interaction ${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$. We identify the regions of the hopping parameters where the MIT is of the Mott type. In these regions, for large U${\mathit{U}}_{\mathit{c}}$, we find a ferromagnetic ground state.

Metal-insulator transition in the generalized Hubbard model

Anatoly A. Ovchinnikov

We present the exact ground-state wave function and energy of the generalized Hubbard model, subjected to the condition that the number of double occupied sites is conserved, for a wide, physically relevant range of parameters. For one hole and one double occupied site the existence of the ferromagnetic ground-state is proved which allow one to determine the critical value of the on-site repulsion corresponding to the point of metal-insulator transition. For the one dimensional model the exact solution for special values of the parameters is obtained. 1
