Spectrum of Goldstone modes in Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell superfluids

Abstract

As a consequence of the continuous translational symmetry breaking, nonuniform Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) superfluids possess a rich spectrum of low-energy bosonic excitations. These excitations, which are gapless due to the Goldstone theorem, are mixtures of phase fluctuations and elastic phonon-like deformations of the order parameter. We derive microscopically the effective Gaussian action of the LOFF Goldstone modes and calculate their dispersion in the long-wavelength limit.

Goldstone modes in Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell superconductors

Kirill V. Samokhin

In nonuniform Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) superconductors, both the gauge symmetry and the continuous translational symmetry of the normal state are spontaneously broken. This leads to additional bosonic excitations, or Goldstone modes, corresponding to the deformations of the order parameter amplitude modulation in real space. We derive general expressions for the energy of the phase and elastic Goldstone modes. As an example, the superfluid density and the elastic modulus of a one-dimensional LOFF superconductor are calculated at low temperatures.

Collective modes in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superconductors: Role of long-range Coulomb interaction and signatures in density response

Ryoga Miwa, Ryoi Ohashi, Satoshi Fujimoto +1 more

We theoretically investigate collective excitations in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states of Pauli-limited superconducting films. When the long-range Coulomb interaction is absent, excitation spectra consist of two gapless and three gapped modes. The gapless modes are the Nambu-Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of the $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry and the translational symmetry. The gapped modes include the Higgs mode and the twofold degenerate modes that cause the oscillation of the domain width and grayness of FFLO nodal planes. We find that the long-range Coulomb interaction only gaps out the gapless phase mode through the Anderson-Higgs mechanism, while the other modes remain unaffected. Furthermore, the field evolution of the dispersion of the gapless elastic mode, the Nambu-Goldstone mode associated with the translational symmetry breaking, is associated with that of the bandwidth of the mid-gap Andreev bound states. We demonstrate that the signature of the elastic mode can be detected by measuring the density-density response function.

Fluctuations and phase transitions in Larkin-Ovchinnikov liquid-crystal states of a population-imbalanced resonant Fermi gas

Leo Radzihovsky

Motivated by a realization of imbalanced Feshbach-resonant atomic Fermi gases, we formulate a low-energy theory of the Fulde-Ferrell and the Larkin-Ovchinnikov (LO) states and use it to analyze fluctuations, stability, and phase transitions in these enigmatic finite momentum-paired superfluids. Focusing on the unidirectional LO pair-density-wave state, which spontaneously breaks the continuous rotational and translational symmetries, we show that it is characterized by two Goldstone modes, corresponding to a superfluid phase and a smectic phonon. Because of the liquid-crystalline ``softness'' of the latter, at finite temperature the three-dimensional state is characterized by a vanishing LO order parameter, quasi-Bragg peaks in the structure and momentum distribution functions, and a ``charge''-4, paired-Cooper-pairs, off-diagonal long-range order, with a superfluid-stiffness anisotropy that diverges near a transition into a nonsuperfluid state. In addition to conventional integer vortices and dislocations, the LO superfluid smectic exhibits composite half-integer vortex-dislocation defects. A proliferation of defects leads to a rich variety of descendant states, such as the charge-4 superfluid and Fermi-liquid nematics and topologically ordered nonsuperfluid states, that generically intervene between the LO state and the conventional superfluid and the polarized Fermi liquid at low and high imbalance, respectively. The fermionic sector of the LO gapless superconductor is also quite unique, exhibiting a Fermi surface of Bogoliubov quasiparticles associated with the Andreev band of states, localized on the array of the LO domain walls.

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov Superfluids with $P$-wave Symmetry in Spinless Fermionic Optical Lattices

Zhen-Fei Zheng, Zhen Zheng, Xu‐Bo Zou +1 more

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state, whose Cooper pairing hosts a non-zero center-of-mass momentum, is predicted and well studied in spin-singlet superfluids in past decades. Different from previous works that engineer FFLO superfluids in spinful cold atoms, we show that the FFLO superfluids, with $p$-wave symmetry, can emerge in a spinless environment associated with nearest-neighbor-site interactions. The novel mechanism of the FFLO superfluids lies on the split Fermi surfaces at low filling factor, which naturally gives rise to Cooper pairings with finite momentum. The phase transition is accompanied by changed Chern numbers, in which, different from the conventional picture, the band gap does not close. The exotic topological transition can be explained by the spontaneously-broken translational invariance of order parameters. Finally, we investigate the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition temperature of the FFLO state, and show its possibility to be observed at finite temperature.

Single-plane-wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state in BCS-BEC crossover

Yan He, Chih-Chun Chien, Qijin Chen +1 more

We study the single-plane-wave Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF) states for BCS-Bose-Einstein condensation crossover at general temperatures $T$. Because we include the important effects of noncondensed pairs, our $T\ensuremath{\ne}0$ phase diagrams are different from those reported in earlier work. We find that generalized LOFF phases may be the ground state for a wide range of (weak through moderately strong) interactions, including the unitary regime. However, these LOFF phases are readily destroyed by nonzero $T$.
