ALGEBRAIC FORMULATION OF QUANTUM ERROR CORRECTION

Abstract

We give a brief introduction to the algebraic formulation of error correction in quantum computing called operator algebra quantum error correction (OAQEC). Then we extend one of the basic results for subsystem codes in operator quantum error correction (OQEC) to the OAQEC setting: Every hybrid classical-quantum code is shown to be unitarily recoverable in an appropriate sense. The algebraic approach of the proof yields a new, less technical proof for the OQEC case.

Stabilizer Formalism for Operator Algebra Quantum Error Correction

Guillaume Dauphinais, David W. Kribs, Michael Vasmer

We introduce a stabilizer formalism for the general quantum error correction framework called operator algebra quantum error correction (OAQEC), which generalizes Gottesman's formulation for traditional quantum error correcting codes (QEC) and Poulin's for operator quantum error correction and subsystem codes (OQEC). The construction generates hybrid classical-quantum stabilizer codes and we formulate a theorem that fully characterizes the Pauli errors that are correctable for a given code, generalizing the fundamental theorems for the QEC and OQEC stabilizer formalisms. We discover hybrid versions of the Bacon-Shor subsystem codes motivated by the formalism, and we apply the theorem to derive a result that gives the distance of such codes. We show how some recent hybrid subspace code constructions are captured by the formalism, and we also indicate how it extends to qudits.

Hybrid Clifford Codes via Operator Algebra Quantum Error Correction and Projective Representation Theory

Jonas Eidesen, David W. Kribs, Andrew Nemec

Clifford codes are a natural generalization of quantum stabilizer codes based primarily on representation theory. This class of codes has previously been extended to the setting of quantum subsystem codes. We formulate a two-fold generalization of Clifford codes, for both the hybrid classical and quantum information and projective representation theory settings. This leads to new classes of hybrid subspace and subsystem Clifford codes. We extend the fundamental representation theoretic quantum error correction theorem to include these codes, based on the operator algebra quantum error correction framework. We also discuss several examples throughout the presentation, of both stabilizer and non-stabilizer type.

New Entanglement-Assisted Codes and Mathematical Structures in Quantum Error Correction

Serge Adonsou

Quantum information processing promises exponential advantages for certain computational and communication tasks, but practical quantum devices are inherently vulnerable to decoherence and operational imperfections. This thesis develops new algebraic and analytical tools for quantum error correction (QEC) aimed at unifying entanglement-assisted coding theory with operator-algebra frameworks, while also providing mathematically rigorous insights for continuous-variable photonic implementations. First, we introduce the framework of entanglement-assisted operator algebra quantum error correction (EA-OAQEC), extending entanglement-assisted QEC in an operator-algebra context. Built on a stabilizer-based formalism, EA-OAQEC unifies and generalizes subspace, subsystem, and hybrid classical-quantum entanglement-assisted codes. We establish a master error-correction theorem, define a generalized distance notion, and develop constructive techniques including gauge fixing, clean-qubit transformations, and entanglement-assisted gauge-fixing procedures. Second, we study general logical operators: unitaries that preserve a stabilizer codespace beyond the traditional Pauli normalizer. We derive explicit structure theorems for the centralizer and normalizer in the full unitary setting and show how normalizer transformations can be parameterized via classical bit matrix multiply complement (BMMC) permutations. Finally, motivated by photonic quantum computing, we analyze finite-rank compressions of the continuous position and momentum operators relevant to Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) codes. We prove that the spectra of these compressions are governed by the roots of classical Hermite polynomials and connect the compressed operators to physically realizable approximations of displacement operations and finite-energy GKP states.

Operator quantum error correction

David W. Kribs, David Poulin

Abstract. This paper is an expanded and more detailed version of the work [1] in which the Operator Quantum Error Correction protocol was introduced. This is a new scheme for the error correction of quantum operations that incorporates the known techniques — i.e. the standard error correction model, the method of decoherence-free subspaces, and the noiseless subsystem method — as special cases, and relies on a generalized mathematical framework for noiseless subsystems that applies to arbitrary quantum operations. We also discuss a number of examples and introduce the notion of “unitarily noiseless subsystems”. A unified and generalized approach to quantum error correction, called Operator Quantum Error Correction (OQEC), was recently introduced in [1]. This model unifies all of the known techniques for the error correction of quantum operations – i.e. the standard model [2, 3, 4, 5], the method of decoherence-free subspaces [6, 7, 8, 9]

QUANTUM ERROR CORRECTION AND STABILIZER CODES

Artur Elezi

The goal of this paper is to provide a self contained detailed and rigorous mathematical introduction to some aspects of the quantum error-correcting codes and especially quantum stabilizer codes without venturing much, if at all, into the world of physics. While most of the results presented are not new, it is not easy to extract a precise mathematical formulation of results and to provide their rigorous proofs by reading the vast number of papers in the field, quite a few of which are written by computer scientists or physicists. It is this formulation and proofs - quite a few of of them new - that we present here. The connections between (a) quantum stabilizer codes and classical self-orthogonal codes and (b) between error correction and error detection have been established in details. Techniques from algebra of finite fields as well as representations of finite abelian groups have been employed here.

Quantum error correction of observables

Cédric Bény, Achim Kempf, David W. Kribs

A formalism for quantum error correction based on operator algebras was introduced by us earlier [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 10052 (2007)] via consideration of the Heisenberg picture for quantum dynamics. The resulting theory allows for the correction of hybrid quantum-classical information and does not require an encoded state to be entirely in one of the corresponding subspaces or subsystems. Here, we provide detailed proofs for our earlier results, derive more results, and elucidate key points with expanded discussions. We also present several examples and indicate how the theory can be extended to operator spaces and general positive operator-valued measures.
