Abstract

We investigate theoretically the possibility to generate squeezing by the light propagation in thin optical fiber without cover, placed into resonant nonlinear medium. The quantum description is based on the Heisenberg equations of motion for the atomic and field variables. The physical conditions for squeezing are evaluated.

Squeezed light generation in a monomode optical fiber

Mary J. Potasek, Bernard Yurke

Squeezed light, in which the quantum noise in one amplitude component is reduced below the vacuum level, has been generated using parametric processes. The starting point described here is the nonlinear Schrodinger equation which models light propagating through optical fibers. When such a dispersive nonlinear medium with a third-order susceptibility is pumped with an optical beam, squeezing can result. It is found that the degree of squeezing oscillates as a function of fiber length in the normal dispersion regime, whereas in the anomalous dispersion regime, it grows exponentially with fiber length. Examination of squeezing near the fiber’s zero dispersion wavelength shows that odd-order dispersive terms have no effect on squeezing. However, small values of higher-order even terms have significant effects on squeezing. In practice, high-frequency components of the squeezing spectrum are difficult to obtain. However, it is shown that a cross-correlation technique may be used to explore the frequency dependence of the squeezing spectrum.

Optical-fiber media for squeezed-state generation

Gerard J Milburn, M. D. Levenson, Robert M. Shelby +3 more

The Kerr nonlinearity characteristic of optical fibers produces squeezed states of light by a mechanism that differs from conventional four-wave mixing. The noise sources characteristic of such a medium also have a unique character. We present a unified picture of these interactions for both traveling-wave and cavity geometries. Results of experiments on squeezing in optical fibers and fiber ring resonators are discussed and compared with the theory.

Generation of polarization-squeezed light in doped resonant media

G. A. Burmakin, Mikhail Yu. Gubin, Alexei V. Prokhorov +1 more

The cross-interaction effects for a two-mode light pulse in an optical matrix doped with atoms that are resonant with the light in the presence of two control optical pump pulses (M scheme) have been analyzed. The fundamental possibility of effective generation of polarization-squeezed light in this system at a simultaneous nonlinear amplification of the probe field is shown. The optimal conditions for generating polarization-squeezed light in a doped optical fiber are found for different problem parameters.

Squeezed states generation in an array of Linear and Nonlinear Waveguides

Rafael Julius, Abdel-Baset M.A. Ibrahim, Ahmad Nazib Alias +1 more

Abstract We demonstrate the generation of squeezed states of light due to the second harmonic generation and Kerr effect in an array of nonlinear waveguides mediated through a linear one. We characterized the electromagnetic field by a quantum mechanical Hamiltonian and the density operator time evolution is obtained from the Von-Neumann equation of motion. Using the quasiprobability positive P of phase space representation, the classical Fokker-Planck equation is obtained from the master equation and translated to its classical matching set of nonlinear differential equations. We showed that because of the new possibilities of correlation between the linear and nonlinear channel waveguides, highly nonclassical light may be produced.

Hybrid squeezing of solitonic resonant radiation in photonic crystal fibers

Truong X. Tran, Fabio Biancalana

Squeezing is a fundamental quantum optical phenomenon - induced by various nonlinear optical processes - in which a special state of the electromagnetic field is generated, for which quantum noise fluctuations are reduced below the shot noise level for certain frequency ranges. Two qualitatively different kinds of squeezing are currently known to take place in optical fibers. The first is the four-wave mixing (FWM) induced quadrature squeezing, in which an intense continuous wave (CW) pump initiates a spontaneous emission of signal and idler waves from vacuum fluctuations at symmetric detunings from the pump. The noise components at the signal and idler frequencies become correlated via the fiber nonlinearity, leading to a reduction of the noise power spectrum below the shot noise level. All the waves participating to the FWM-induced squeezing are monochromatic waves. The second kind of squeezing is the so called self-phase modulation (SPM) induced squeezing, in which the spectral components of an intense short pulse in a coherent state become correlated via the SPM during propagation. We demonstrate theoretically that a third kind of squeezing is possible in optical fibers, in which the noise spectrum of the quasi-monochromatic resonant radiation (RR) emitted by optical solitons when subject to perturbations shows evidence of photon correlation and a reduction of noise below the shot-noise level.

Numerical Simulations on Quantum Noise Squeezing for Soliton-like Pulses in Optical Fiber

Generation of light with nonclassical properties, such as squeezed light, has gathered a lot of attention because of possible uses in such areas as quantum state engineering, quantum imaging, continuous variable quantum computing, and detection of gravitational waves. Squeezed light is generally produced by transporting light through a nonlinear medium. One such media is Kerr-nonlinear optical fibres. We aim to find the parameters for a fibre polarization squeezing setup by studying the dependencies of quantum noise suppression on the duration of the pulse and the input power. This is performed by modeling the light field propagation using the split-step Fourier method to numerically solve the stochastic nonlinear Schrödinger equation obtained by using the Wigner representation. This equation includes such physical effects as damping, quantum loss noise, dispersion, Kerr and Raman nonlinearities, and stochastic Raman noise.
