Abstract

It is proposed the solution of an urgent problem of developing broadband superconducting devices via implementation of multi-element Josephson structures with an expanded dynamic range (due to the increase in the number of cells) and required high linearity of the transfer function of magnetic signal into voltage (due to the use of specially designed Josephson cells with a highly linear voltage response). Active electrically small antenna prototypes based on the proposed multi-element structures are experimentally studied.

Superconducting quantum arrays (SQAs) capable of providing highly linear voltage response to magnetic signal and high dynamic range have been suggested and developed. Base elements of the arrays, quantum cells, were devised and studied in detail. Using niobium process, SQAs with different number of the cells and prototypes of the SQA-based broadband active electrically small antennas were fabricated and tested.

Superconducting Quantum Arrays

Superconducting Quantum Arrays (SQAs) based on integration of quantum cells each consisting of two Josephson-junction parallel arrays [Differential Quantum Cell (DQC)] are analyzed for applications in broadband radio frequency systems. These SQAs are capable of providing highly linear magnetic signal to voltage transfer with high dynamic range. Both detail study of the quantum cells with realistic parameters and analysis of their characteristics, including voltage response linearity, are presented and discussed. A prototype of an active electrically small antenna is implemented based on an SQA containing 560 DQCs. We demonstrated the SQA voltage response swing as high as ~ 100 mV at a transfer factor of ~ 6.5 mV/μT.

Superconducting Josephson structures with high linearity of transformation of magnetic signal into voltage

Igor I. Soloviev, Victor K. Kornev, N. V. Klenov +1 more

Possible approaches to the creation of Josephson superconducting circuits with a high linearity of transformation of a magnetic signal into voltage and a wide dynamic range have been described. Realization of such circuit by the creation of a special spatial inhomogeneity in chains of Josephson junctions and connection of these chains into a differential circuit has been considered. A new method for linearizing the transfer function of a single two-junction superconducting quantum interference device, which is an elementary cell of the chain, by connecting to it an additional loop playing the role of a nonlinear transformer of the magnetic flux has been described. For both approaches, the basic analytical expressions describing the synthesized circuits are presented. The data on numerical calculation and experimental measurements of samples produced on the basis of niobium technology with the critical current density of Josephson junctions of 4.5 kA/cm 2 are reported. The approaches developed in the work can serve as a basis for the creation of highly efficient gigahertz superconducting amplifiers for cellular and satellite communications and can be applied for improving the characteristics of SQUID-based devices.

Active Superconducting Electrically Small Antennas: Design Issues of Basic Cells

We discuss design issues and present Nb-based layout designs of two basic cells for broadband active electrically small antennas based on superconducting quantum arrays. The cells are the differential array circuit and bi-SQUID. The cell layouts realize parameter values answering results of the in-depth theoretical analysis performed earlier for attaining the high-linearity voltage response to magnetic signal. The layouts are to give reference approaches to the antenna circuit designs to be fabricated using niobium process.

Broadband active electrically small superconductor antennas

Victor K. Kornev, Nikolay V. Kolotinskiy, Aleksei Sharafiev +2 more

Abstract A new type of broadband active electrically small antenna (ESA) based on superconducting quantum arrays (SQAs) has been proposed and developed. These antennas are capable of providing both sensing and amplification of broadband electromagnetic signals with a very high spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR)—up to 100 dB (and even more)—with high sensitivity. The frequency band can range up to tens of gigahertz, depending on Josephson junction characteristic frequency, set by fabrication. In this paper we review theoretical and experimental studies of SQAs and SQA-based antenna prototypes of both transformer and transformer-less types. The ESA prototypes evaluated were fabricated using a standard Nb process with critical current density 4.5 kA cm −2 . Measured device characteristics, design issues and comparative analysis of various ESA types, as well as requirements for interfaces, are reviewed and discussed.

Superconducting Quantum Arrays for Broadband RF Systems

Victor K. Kornev, Aleksei Sharafiev, Igor I. Soloviev +2 more

Superconducting Quantum Arrays (SQAs), homogenous arrays of Superconducting Quantum Cells, are developed for implementation of broadband radio frequency (RF) systems capable of providing highly linear magnetic signal to voltage transfer with high dynamic range, including active electrically small antennas (ESAs). Among the proposed quantum cells which are bi-SQUID and Differential Quantum Cell (DQC), the latter delivered better performance for SQAs. A prototype of the transformer-less active ESA based on a 2D SQA with nonsuperconducting electric connection of the DQCs was fabricated using HYPRES niobium process with critical current density 4.5 kA/cm 2 . The measured voltage response is characterized by a peak-to-peak swing of ~100 mV and steepness of ~6500 μV/μT.
