Abstract

We experimentally detect entanglement in modular position-momentum variables of down-converted photon pairs which have passed through D-slit apertures. We employ two entanglement criteria, one using variances of the modular variables, the other using the Shannon entropy.

Experimental observation of quantum correlations in modular variables

We experimentally detect entanglement in modular position and momentum variables of photon pairs which have passed through $D$-slit apertures. We first employ an entanglement criteria recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 210501 (2011)], using variances of the modular variables. We then propose an entanglement witness for modular variables based on the Shannon entropy and test it experimentally. Finally, we derive criteria for Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen-steering correlations using variances and entropy functions. In both cases, the entropic criteria are more successful at identifying quantum correlations in our data.

Detecting multipartite spatial entanglement with modular variables

Mariana R. Barros, O. Jiménez Farías, Arne Keller +3 more

Interference phenomena of quantum systems have been studied in the context of fundamental aspects of quantum physics and are considered a necessary resource for quantum information. Here we investigate the interference of multiparticle wave packets in terms of modular variables, which is a natural and convenient way to describe two or more interfering wave functions. Through the modular-variable description, interesting phenomena appear such as the complementarity between the number of wave packets and the width of the peaks of the momentum distribution. In the multipartite case, this effect produces quantum entanglement. We derive entanglement criteria that test for bipartite entanglement in generic bipartitions of a multipartite quantum state and use these criteria to test for genuine $D$-partite entanglement.

Simultaneous observation of correlations in position-momentum and polarization variables

Marcelo Pereira de Almeida, Stephen Patrick Walborn, P. H. Souto Ribeiro

We demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to prepare and detect photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric downconversion which exhibit simultaneous position-momentum and polarization correlations. We discuss the use of these correlations in several four-dimensional key distribution protocols.
