Abstract

A new source of two diode laser beams, spatially separated but optically phase-locked with each other, is used to study the modulation transfer spectroscopy of coherent population trapping resonance (CPT). The spectrum for the (87)Rb D2 line is obtained with narrow linewidth and high signal-to-noise ratio, and analyzed with different experimental parameters. A theoretical analysis of the CPT modulation transfer spectra is deduced from the density matrix equation of motion, and found to be in good agreement with the experimental results.

We theoretically and experimentally study Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) resonance with phase modulation detection. We measured the time response behavior of CPT resonance using an87Rb gas cell and the D1-line vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser(VCSEL) and calculated the periodic behavior of the density matrix based on eigenvector algorithm. Experiment results are good agreement with calculation results.

Modulation spectroscopy of coherent population trapping resonance and light shifts

Dmitry S. Chuchelov, Vitali V. Vassiliev, Maria I. Vaskovskaya +5 more

Abstract We develop a theory of modulation response of the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance. We consider the simplest three-level atom, but take into account the polychromatic spectrum of the pumping and probing light produced by pure FM modulation of single frequency field. The analysis based on the density matrix equations rigorously includes the most important for applications range of modulation parameters where modulation frequency and deviation are comparable with or greater than the CPT linewidth, so the response of the atomic medium is not adiabatic. Some theoretical results, in particular the possibility of using a quadrature response to modulation to suppress light shift, are compared with the experiment carried out with a diode laser (VCSEL) and 87 Rb atoms.

Spectroscopy of coherent population trapping with a light source based on a femtosecond laser

Alexey V. Akimov, N. Kolachevsky, А. В. Соколов +5 more

A new source of the bichromatic laser field with a stable mean value of the difference frequency is used to study coherent population trapping (CPT). A high stability of the difference phase of the fields of the radiation source is achieved by phase locking the radiation frequency of two semiconductor lasers to longitudinal modes of a femtosecond laser. The first experimental results on the spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rubidium are presented. The possibility of using the new method for spectroscopy of CPT resonances in rare-earth atom vapours is discussed.

Study of the Laser Linewidth Influence on "lin ¿ lin" Coherent Population Trapping

We investigated, theoretically and experimentally, the influence of the laser spectrum (in particular the linewidth) on the coherent population trapping (CPT) resonance in87Rb buffer gas cell. We investigated the case of linearly polarized laser fields. The experiments have been performed by using either a current-modulated vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) or a phase-locked-laser (PLL) system. A model based on the density matrix approach has been used for the data interpretation. We found that, under experimental conditions suitable for compact clock applications, the fact that VCSELs have a broader spectrum than PLLs does not influence significantly the CPT signal amplitude. We demonstrate that a not negligible role is played by the destructive interference between different CPT excitation channels and propose further investigations to evaluate this contribution with respect to the other causes. Finally, we discuss the application of this scheme in compact atomic clocks.

Dynamic Continuous-Wave Spectroscopy of Coherent Population Trapping at Phase-Jump Modulation

M. Yu. Basalaev, V.I. Yudin, A.V. Taichenachev +5 more

A method of dynamic continuous-wave spectroscopy of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances using phase modulation of the jump type is developed. The time evolution of the spectroscopic signal is investigated. A method for the formation of an error signal for frequency stabilization is proposed. We show that our approach has a reduced sensitivity to the line-shape asymmetry of the CPT resonance. The experimental results are in good qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions based on a mathematical model of a three-level $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ system in a bichromatic field. This method can be used in atomic frequency standards (including chip-scale atomic clocks).

Bichromatic spectroscopy of coherent population trapping resonances with phase‐locked fields

Alexey V. Akimov, Arthur Matveev, А. В. Соколов +3 more

Abstract We propose a new approach to the study of coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances using a phase‐coherent bichromatic light source based on a mode‐locked femtosecond laser as an intermediate frequency coupler. The source consists of two diode lasers tuned to the rubidium D2 line (780 nm) which are phase locked to different longitudinal modes of a femtosecond laser MIRA‐900F with 75 MHz repetition rate. Using this bichromatic source with a stable differential frequency, we excited and investigated the CPT resonances in the three‐level system 5s S1/2 (F = 2) ↔ 5s P3/2 (F = 2) ↔ 5s S1/2 (F = 3) of the 85Rb atom. Potentially, this method opens up the possibility of coherently exciting Raman transitions with differential frequencies up to hundreds of terahertz. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
