Abstract

We demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to detect and measure the self-broadening rate and frequency shift of the rubidium second principal series atomic transitions at very high atomic vapour densities up to ∼10 17 cm -3 .The experimental procedure includes the usual absorption measurement technique and a sealed-off nano-cell containing Rb vapour operating at high temperatures with a thickness of L = λ/2, where λ is the resonant wavelength (420 nm).

Broadening and Shift of the D1 and D2 Lines of Rb Atoms by Neon: Resolving Hyperfine Components in a Half-Wave Cell Using Double Differentiation with Respect to Frequency

Armen D. Sargsyan, T. A. Vartanyan, David G. Sarkisyan

Abstract A cell with a submicron thickness was used to measure the broadening and shift of the D1 and D2 lines of Rb atoms by neon. The resolution of hypefine components is achieved by a combination of two techniques. First, the Rb vapor column thickness in the direction of propagation of the laser radiation was chosen equal to half of its wavelength λ under conditions of resonance with the atomic transition frequency. For rubidium atoms λ/2 ~ 400 nm. At a nanocell thickness L ~ λ/2, in the transmission spectrum A(ν), the spectral lines of atomic transitions are narrowed due to the exclusion of Doppler broadening. Second, further narrowing of the detected signals was achieved by the double differentiation of the transmission spectrum, A''(ν). The transmission spectra of pure rubidium vapor and rubidium vapor with the addition of neon have been measured at different pressures. The measured values of the shift coefficients of the D1 and D2 lines of rubidium in the presence of Ne were –1.1 ± 0.2 MHz/Torr and –2.1 ± 0.2 MHz/Torr, respectively. The broadening coefficients of the D1 and D2 lines coincide and are equal to 10 ± 1 MHz/Torr. Due to its high spectral resolution, this technique allows separate measurements for each individual transition.

Dependence of Resonant Absorption Linewidth on Atomic Vapour Column Thickness for D1 Line of Cs Atoms Confined in Nano-Cell

Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan, Y. Pashayan-Leroy +3 more

A new nano-cell with smoothly varying longitudinal thickness of the atomic vapour layer L in the range of 350 - 5100 nm allowing to study the resonant absorption of D1 and D2 lines of Cs atoms for thicknesses changing from L = Lambda/2 to L = 6 Lambda with the step of Lambda/2 (Lambda = 852 nm or 894 nm are the resonant laser wavelengths) and for different intensities is developed. It is revealed that for low laser intensities there is narrowing of the resonant absorption spectrum for the thicknesses L = (2n + 1)Lambda/2 (where n is an integer) up to L = 7Lambda /2 and broadening of the spectrum for L = n Lambda. For relatively high laser intensity (>1 mW/cm2), velocity selective optical pumping/saturated resonances of a reduced absorption (with the line-width close to the natural one), and centred on the hyperfine transitions occur when L = n Lambda. The possible application of these resonance peaks is given. The developed theoretical model describes well the experiment.

Resonant fluorescence on D/sub 2/ line of Rb atomic vapour confined in a nano-cell with the gap thickness in the range of 50-500 nm and excited by laser diode radiation (/spl lambda/ = 780 nm) has been studied. The fluorescence spectra was detected in perpendicular direction to the laser-radiation direction.

Measuring Transmittance in Rubidium Vapour Cells Using an Extremely Weak Coherent Field of Light

Jianliao Deng, Li Yong-Qing, Wang Yu-Zhu

The absorptive properties of the atomic transition in the Rb 85 D2 (A) line (5S 1/2 -5P 3/2 ) at 780.0 nm are measured by using a continuous tunable diode laser and a CCD detector in Rb vapour cell under the condition of extremely weak incident intensity. When the intensity of incident light decreases from 420 pW/cm 2 to 0.03 pW/cm 2 , the transmittance is found to be independent of the incident intensity within our experimental accuracy.

Laser spectroscopy with nanometric cells containing atomic vapor of metal: influence of buffer gas

David G. Sarkisyan, G. Hakhumyan, Armen D. Sargsyan +3 more

Comparison of absorption and fluorescence in a nano-cell containing Rb vapor with other Rb nano-cells with addition of neon gas is presented. It is shown that the effect of collapse and revival of Dicke-type narrowing occurs for Rb nanocells containing N2 as buffer gas under 6 and 20 Torr pressure for the thickness L = λ /2 and L = where λ is the resonant λ, laser wavelength 794 nm (D1 line). Particularly for 6 Torr the line-width of the transmission spectrum for the thickness L =λ/2 is 2 times narrower than that for L = λ. For an ordinary Rb cell with L = 0.1 - 10 cm with addition of buffer gas, the velocity selective optical pumping/saturation (VSOP) resonances in saturated absorption spectra are fully suppressed when the buffer gas pressure > 0.5 Torr. A spectacular difference is that for L = λ, VSOP resonances located at the atomic transitions are still observable even when Ne pressure is ≥ 6 Torr. Narrowband fluorescence spectra of a nano-cell with L = λ/2 can be used as a convenient tool for online buffer gas pressure monitoring for the conditions when ordinary pressure gauges are unusable. Comparison of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in a nano-cell filled with pure (without a buffer gas) Rb with another nano-cell, where buffer gas nitrogen is added, is presented. The use of N2 gas inside Rb nano-cells strongly extends the range of coupling laser detunings in which it is still possible to form EIT resonance.
