Abstract

We have observed the splitting of coherent population trapping resonances in Cs vapor due to the influence of the nuclear magnetic moment which is already resolved in a magnetic field of about the strength of the geostatic field. By choosing appropriate laser polarizations and field direction vector and quadrupole coupled transitions can be investigated separately. The splitting allows to determine the ratio of nuclear to electronic g-factors.

Determination of the structure of hyperfine sublevels of Rb in strong magnetic fields by means of the coherent population trapping technique

Armen D. Sargsyan, R. Mirzoyan, T. A. Vartanyan +1 more

The splitting of hyperfine sublevels of the 85 Rb atom in strong magnetic fields has been studied by means of the coherent population trapping technique. Narrow resonances with a high signal-to-noise ratio have been detected in a 30-μm-thick spectroscopic cell. The magnetic field in the direction transverse to the laser beams has been created by permanent magnets and has reached 1600 G. Owing to the exclusive narrowness of the cell, the field in it is almost uniform. The break of the coupling between the electronic and nuclear moments, as well as the transition to the Paschen-Back regime in magnetic fields above 600 G, has been observed. The derivatives of the frequency shifts of the observed resonances and their asymptotic values in strong magnetic fields have been determined in terms of the magnetic field strength. The experimental results have been interpreted within a theoretical model based on the known constants of the hyperfine structure of the Rb atom.

Optical pumping and spectroscopy of Cs vapor at high magnetic field

Ben A. Olsen, Brian Patton, Yuan‐Yu Jau +1 more

We have measured changes in the ground-state populations of Cs vapor induced by optical pumping at high magnetic field. The $2.7$-T field of our experiments is strong enough to decouple the nuclear and electronic spins, allowing us to independently measure each population. The spatial dependence of the Cs populations in small amounts of buffer gas obeys a simple coupled diffusion model and the relative populations reveal the details of relaxation within the vapor cell. Optical pumping can produce high nuclear polarization in the Cs vapor due to perturbations of the hyperfine interaction during collisions with buffer-gas particles and depending on the pumping transition, radiation trapping can strongly influence the electronic and nuclear polarizations in the vapor.

Selection rules and line strengths of Zeeman-split dark resonances

R. Wynands, A. Nagel, Sebastián Brandt +2 more

In a weak magnetic field coherent dark resonances in cesium vapor are split into up to 15 resolved components, depending on field direction and laser polarizations. We find that the selection rules are different for vapor cells with and without buffer gas due to a change in multipolarity of the two-photon coupling. At low laser intensities or sufficiently high buffer-gas pressure optical pumping between different dark resonances can be neglected so that a simple model allows one to calculate the relative line strengths, giving complete agreement with the experimental spectra.

Coherent population trapping resonance on degenerate two-level system for magnetic field measurement

Emilia A. Alipieva, S. Gateva, Elena T. Taskova

Coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances on the degenerate two-level system of the (Fg=2→Fe=1) transition of the 87Rb D1 line were investigated in an uncoated vacuum cell by means of level-crossing type experiments-sweeping a magnetic field around zero value and using a single laser beam. The two-photon resonance manifests itself as fluorescence canceling when the system of levels is degenerate (at zero point of magnetic field). The influence of weak transverse magnetic fields on the amplitude and width of the resonance was investigated. The CPT resonances were observed with linear, circular and elliptical polarized laser light. Transverse magnetic field widens the resonances obtained by linear and circular polarization but splits the resonance created by slightly elliptically polarized laser light. The dependence of this splitting on the elliptical ratio and experimental geometry were investigated. Due to its narrow width and sensitivity to low magnetic fields (< 1 G) this resonance is very promising for small magnetic field measurement.

Manifestation of high-rank polarization moments in the fluorescence CPT resonance

Emilia A. Alipieva, Elena T. Taskova, S. Gateva +1 more

Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) resonance obtained with linearly polarized laser beam through magnetic field sweep (Hanle configuration) was investigated in 87Rb D1 line. Influence of the coherence due to high-rank polarization moment (hexadecapole moment), created in the medium, on the CPT resonance shape was calculated and experimentally detected in fluorescence. It was observed as an inverted structure at a high power of excitation. To distinguish resonances due to coherence between Zeeman sub-levels with ΔmF=2 from that with ΔmF=4, the Larmour frequency ωLmodulated by applying an a.c. magnetic field (a.c. MF). Resonance signal at frequency corresponding to 4ωL observed in a fluorescence, and after lock-in on the frequency corresponding to frequency difference between sub-levels ΔmF=4.
