Matter-wave solitons supported by quadrupole–quadrupole interactions and anisotropic discrete lattices

Rong-Xuan Zhong, Nan Huang, Huang-Wu Li +4 more

We numerically and analytically investigate the formations and features of two-dimensional discrete Bose–Einstein condensate solitons, which are constructed by quadrupole–quadrupole interactional particles trapped in the tunable anisotropic discrete optical lattices. The square optical lattices in the model can be formed by two pairs of interfering plane waves with different intensities. Two hopping rates of the particles in the orthogonal directions are different, which gives rise to a linear anisotropic system. We find that if all of the pairs of dipole and anti-dipole are perpendicular to the lattice panel and the line connecting the dipole and anti-dipole which compose the quadrupole is parallel to horizontal direction, both the linear anisotropy and the nonlocal nonlinear one can strongly influence the formations of the solitons. There exist three patterns of stable solitons, namely horizontal elongation quasi-one-dimensional discrete solitons, disk-shape isotropic pattern solitons and vertical elongation quasi-continuous solitons. We systematically demonstrate the relationships of chemical potential, size and shape of the soliton with its total norm and vertical hopping rate and analytically reveal the linear dispersion relation for quasi-one-dimensional discrete solitons.

Solitonic excitations in the Ising anisotropic chain BaCo2V2O8 under large transverse magnetic field

Quentin Faure, Shintaro Takayoshi, B. Grenier +6 more

We study the dynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-Heisenberg antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{BaCo}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ under a transverse magnetic field. Combining inelastic neutron scattering experiments and theoretical analyses by field theories and numerical simulations, we mainly elucidate the structure of the spin excitation spectrum in the high-field phase, appearing above the quantum phase transition point ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{0}{H}_{c}\ensuremath{\approx}10\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$. We find that it is characterized by collective solitonic excitations superimposed on a continuum. These solitons are strongly bound in pairs due to the effective staggered field induced by the nondiagonal $g$ tensor of the compound and are topologically different from the fractionalized spinons in the weak-field region. The dynamical susceptibility numerically calculated with the infinite time-evolving block decimation method shows an excellent agreement with the measured spectra, which enables us to identify the dispersion branches with elementary excitations. The lowest-energy dispersion has an incommensurate nature and has a local minimum at an irrational wave number due to the applied transverse field.

Relation between high-energy quasiparticles of quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnets in a magnetic field and a doublon of a Hubbard chain

Masanori Kohno

In spin-1/2 one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets and anisotropic triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets, high-energy states carrying considerable spectral weights have been observed in a magnetic field using inelastic neutron scattering. Such high-energy properties cannot be explained in terms of either Nambu-Goldstone bosons due to spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries or quasiparticles in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Here, we show that the mechanism causing the high-energy states is analogous to that of the upper Hubbard band in the one-dimensional Hubbard model, by theoretically tracing the origin of the high-energy states back to string solutions of the Bethe ansatz.
