Abstract

A possibility for amplification of image brightness in a strontium vapor has been pointed out for the first time. A regime for image intensification in the violet spectral region has been realized experimentally. An increase in image sharpness was investigated theoretically for a multipass self-conjugate optical system with an active medium.

A multipass optical system for phase object image brightness amplification is proposed. The image contrast in such systems is demonstrated to reach 70% and more. By amplification on strontium vapor the images have been obtained of dynamic objects with control signals from telemonitors with a video recorder.

RADIATIONS AMPLIFICATION AND IMAGE CONVERSION IN STIMULATED FOUR-WAVE PARAMETRIC MIXING IN POTASSIUM VAPOR

M. E. Movsesyan, A. Papoyan, Svetlana Shmavonyan

We report the results of experimental investigation of radiations amplification in stimulated four-wave parametric mixing in potassium vapor using two cells holding active medium (generator-amplifier system). Under the two-photon excitation on 4S→6S transition, the gain of parametrically generated violet radiation on 5P→4S transitions is caused by the amplification of infrared radiation on 6S→5P transitions due to optically pumped stimulated emission process. The optimum conditions for seed radiations amplification are found. For these conditions we realized, for the first time, an image conversion from infrared region of spectrum (3.66 µ) to violet (0.4 µ) with quantum efficiency of conversion over 100% (“brightness intensification”).

Use of an iodine active quantum filter for image intensification

Yu F Kutaev, S. K. Mankevich, O Yu Nosach +1 more

Intensification of the image brightness using an iodine active quantum filter is studied experimentally. The image brightness was intensified by a factor of 3000 while preserving the diffraction-limited resolution. The obtained results suggest the possibility of using an iodine active quantum filter in laser ranging and laser probing.

Maxim V. Trigub, Dmitrii V. Shiyanov, Vasilii V. Vlasov

In this paper the design of high speed brightness amplifiers on transitions of copper and manganese atoms is discussed. A possibility of obtaining images in active optical systems with a brightness amplifier operating at 100 kHz frequency is demonstrated. The results of comparing the images obtained using brightness amplifiers on copper bromide and manganese bromide vapors are given.

Noiseless amplification of optical images

Mikhail I. Kolobov, Luigi Lugiato

We propose a scheme for amplification of faint optical images with coherent light which preserves the signal-to-noise ratio in the image. The scheme consists of a ring-cavity optical parametric amplifier as an active element and two imaging lenses. This system can amplify images either ``point by point,'' when a small region is amplified at a time, or by narrow rings, depending on its operation; in both cases it works as an image scanner. We have evaluated the inherent noise of this amplification scheme which has its physical origin in the phenomenon of spontaneous parametric radiation. This noise gives a lower ultimate limit for the intensity of the image that can be noiselessly amplified by our scheme. We have estimated spatial resolution of the scheme and formulated criteria for its noiseless operation.
