Detailed study of collisional background in collinear laser photoionization of fast atoms

Sergei A. Aseyev, Yu. A. Kudryavtsev, Vladilen S Letokhov +1 more

We showed that there are two main processes that produce the collisional background in the method of the collinear laser photoionization of fast atoms. The first process is the ionization of fast atoms and the second one is the collisional excitation of fast atoms into Rydberg states. The first experimental results on Rydberg states formation cross sections in atomic collisions were obtained. For the first time it has been experimentally obtained such cross sections scaled as n−3.To reduce the collisional noise the use of fast Rydberg atoms ionization in permanent magnetic field is proposed.

Doppler-free Rydberg spectroscopy in a warm vapor

Jeremy Glick, Brielle E. Anderson, T. Nathan Nunley +4 more

The common approach for producing Rydberg atoms in warm vapor cells is with lasers arranged in a counterpropagating, collinear configuration. Doppler effects in these configurations reduce the efficiency of excitation to the Rydberg state while also producing broadened spectral features. In this work, we demonstrate a three-laser Doppler-free excitation using laser beams whose k vectors sum to 0, resulting in an enhancement in the Rydberg density and narrowed spectral features. A three-times enhancement to Rydberg density along with a near four-times reduction in spectroscopic linewidths are observed compared to a collinear configuration. This Doppler-free configuration could prove beneficial to Rydberg atomic technologies, such as electric field sensing with small volumes or deterministic photon sources.

Two-photon resonant forward four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor involving Rydberg states

Natalia R. de Melo, S. S. Vianna

We report on observations of four-wave mixing in rubidium vapor via two-photon resonant excitation with nd and (n+2)s states, for n=14–20. The intensity of the generated beam is studied in a collinear configuration, and the results are consistent with the predictions of a theoretical model based on the semiclassical Maxwell–Bloch equations, considering interference effects associated with multiple excitation pathways and with internally generated fields. We have also observed spectral broadening of the two-photon resonant lines, which is well described by a linear dependence on atomic density, in accordance with collision-induced broadening.
