Abstract

The phase dependence and independence of the response of a trichromatically driven two-level medium to an arbitrarily intense probe field have been studied. The sum of the relative phases of the sideband components of the trichromatic field compared to the central component plays a crucial role in the response of the medium. For a weak probe field, as the sum of the relative phases changes from 0 to π, multiple switching can be achieved, in which switching from normal to anomalous dispersion occurs in multiple separate frequency regimes. The remarkable dependence on the sum phase is also shown for a strong probe field. On the other hand, when the sum of the two relative phases is fixed, the changes in the respective phases have no influence on the response of the medium.

Double switching from normal to anomalous dispersion via trichromatic phase manipulation of electromagnetically induced transparency

Xiangming Hu, Guangling Cheng, Jin-hua Zou +2 more

We present a theoretical analysis of trichromatic phase manipulation of electromagnetically induced transparency and show that it is possible to obtain double switching, in which switching from normal to anomalous dispersion occurs in two separate frequency regimes. In particular, a four-level system in the N configuration is considered, in which electromagnetically induced transparency is established in the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ subsystem and the additional transition is connected to the probe transition and is coupled by a trichromatic field. It is shown that the sum of the relative phases of the sideband components compared to that of the central component plays a crucial role in the absorption and dispersion spectra. Normal dispersion with negligible absorption or anomalous dispersion with small gain can be achieved in multiple-frequency regimes by varying the sum of the relative phases. When the sum phase is changed from 0 to $\ensuremath{\pi}$, switching from normal to anomalous dispersion occurs in the two different frequency regimes. On the other hand, so long as we fix the sum of two relative phases, the absorption and dispersion spectra keep their own features unchanged no matter how we vary the respective relative phases.

Phase Dependence of Fluorescence Spectrum of a Two-Level Atom in a Trichromatic Field

LI Jing-yan, Xiangming Hu, Xiaoxia Li +3 more

We examine the phase-dependent effects in resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom driven by a trichromatic modulated field. It is shown that the fluorescence spectrum depends crucially on the sum of relative phases of the sideband components compared to the central component, not simply on the respective phases. The appearance or disappearance of the central peak and the selective elimination of the sideband peaks are achieved simply by varying the sum phase. Once the sum phase is fixed, the spectrum keeps its features unchanged regardless of the respective relative phases.

Amplitude and phase control of trichromatic electromagnetically induced transparency

Xiangming Hu, Jin-hua Zou, Xing Li +2 more

We study the dependence of absorption and dispersion spectra on amplitudes and phases of the driving fields in multiple electromagnetically induced transparency. For this purpose we consider trichromatic excitation in a three-level Λ atomic system, in which a trichromatic control laser and a monochromatic probe laser are applied to two different transitions, respectively. We numerically calculate the absorption and dispersion spectra. Two characteristic features are found. Firstly, the central transparency can be made to appear or to disappear by utilizing the amplitudes and phases of the driving components. Secondly, so long as we fix the sum of two relative phases of two sideband excitation components to the central component, the absorption and dispersion spectra keep their own lineshapes unchanged no matter how we vary the respective relative phases.

Trichromatic Manipulation of Kerr Nonlinearity in a Three-Level A Atomic System

Hongju Guo, Niu Yue-Ping, Wang Li-chun +2 more

Trichromatic manipulation of Kerr nonlinearity in a three-level A atomic configuration is investigated theoretically. It is shown that for a weak monochromatic probe Held, the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved in multiple separate transparent windows due to interference effect of multiple two-photon Raman channels. Furthermore, the property of Kerr nonlinearity can be controlled by the sum of the relative phases of the sideband components of the trichromatic pump Geld compared to the central component.

Sideband manipulation of population inversion in a three-level Λ atomic system

Hongju Guo, Niu Yue-Ping, Jin Shi-Qi +1 more

Sideband manipulation of population inversion in a three-level A atomic configuration is investigated theoretically. Compared with the case of a nearly monochromatic field, a population inversion between an excited state and a ground state has been found in a wide sideband intensity range by increasing the difference in frequency between three components. Furthermore, the population inversion can be controlled by the sum of the relative phases of the sideband components of the trichromatic pump field with respective to the phase of the central component. Changing the sum phase from 0 to π, the population inversion between the excited state and the ground state can increase within nearly half of the sideband intensity range. At the same time, the sideband intensity range that corresponds to the system exhibiting inversion ρ 00 > ρ 11 also becomes wider evidently.

Absorption and dispersion spectra of a polychromatic field in a two-level medium driven by a strong polychromatic pumping field

Yu. A. Zinin, N. V. Sushilov

An analytic expression of the polarization induced by a polychromatic weak probe field in a two-level medium, driven by a strong polychromatic pumping field, is obtained. This expression allows one to obtain both the absorption and dispersion spectra at any frequency of a probe field. The numerically calculated graphs of the central-component probe-field absorption and dispersion spectra, depending on the pumping-field amplitude in the cases of the one-, two- three-, four-, and five-component pumping field, are presented. It is shown that when the probe-field detuning is close to the strong-field Rabi frequency, the absorption spectrum changes to the dispersionlike form, while the dispersion spectrum changes to the absorptionlike one.
