Abstract

An investigation was made of the quality of reconstruction of the signal wavefront in a single-pass system for compensation of phase distortions accompanied by frequency up-conversion. It was found that the best resolution and contrast were achieved when the reconstructed field was observed in the optimal focusing plane and the image of an inhomogeneous medium was transferred to the center of a nonlinear converter. The efficiency of the parametric process was enhanced by two-photon excitation of the 3 s –4 s transition in sodium vapor. The converter resolution was 13 lines/mm. The dependence of the contrast in the reconstructed field on the parameters of the compensation system was determined.

Possibility of compensation of nonlinear phase distortions by parametric radiation converters

É S Voronin, Valery V. Ivakhnik, Vera M. Petnikova +2 more

The example of Gaussian beams is used in considering the possibility of compensation of nonlinear phase distortions in wavefront reversal systems by means of degenerate parametric processes. The necessary correction of the wavefront is achieved by using spatially modulated pump radiation beams. A suitably corrected reversed wave reconstructs the wavefront of the original signal after passing for the second time through the distorting medium.

Use of degenerate parametric processes for wavefront correction (review)

É S Voronin, Vera M. Petnikova, В. А. Шувалов

A review is given of results obtained by the present authors in investigations of wavefront reversal in degenerate parametric processes. An analysis is made of the problem of transmission of signal radiation along an optically inhomogeneous path. A model of a system to compensate for phase distortions using wavefront reversal in parametric processes is developed. The mathematical device of the spread function is used to determine the limiting capabilities of the method. It is found that satisfactory compensation for distortions is achieved when a parametric radiation converter resolves the effective scale of the inhomogeneities. The possibilities for implementing these systems in practice are discussed.

Compensation of phase distortions in a single-transit wavefront-reversal system with a degenerate four-photon interaction

M S Barashkov, I. N. Matveev, Vera M. Petnikova +3 more

A proposal is made for a system designed to compensate phase distortions in a wavefront-reversal system in which some part of the signal radiation is deflected to pass through a spatial frequency filter and then acts as the pump; the remainder of such radiation acts as the signal. It is shown that a suitable selection of the pass band of the filter can ensure compensation of large-scale phase inhomogeneities in the system and can enable reconstruction of a small-scale structure of an object.

Parametric noise in a nonlinear frequency up-converter of infrared signals by two-photon pumping of 3S–3Dand 3S–5Stransitions in sodium vapor

Yu A Galaĭchuk, Vladimir A. Kudryashov, V. L. Strizhevskiǐ +2 more

A systematic analysis was made of the spectral characteristics of resonance four-photon parametric conversion of infrared radiation as a result of two-photon resonance pumping of the 3S–3D and 3S–5S transitions in sodium and the influence of these characteristics on the threshold sensitivity of a parametric conversion detector was investigated. An experimental study was made of the characteristics of the noise radiation generated as a result of hyperparametric scattering. The results obtained can be used to select the optimal parameters of high-sensitivity detectors of weak infrared signals by parametric conversion in alkali metal vapors.

Effective frequency conversion of radiation in sodium vapor

An investigation was made of frequency conversion in sodium vapor. When the phase-matching conditions were satisfied and the nonlinear susceptibility increased under signal resonance conditions, the quantum efficiency of the conversion process was 40% at low pumping rates.

Image formation in phase conjugation with large wavelength conversion

Peter Unsbo, Farhad Saeidi, Göran Manneberg

The imaging properties of wave-front reversal with nonlinear probe dependence and large frequency conversion are investigated. A calculation is made of the field generated by an arbitrary probe field distribution. It is found that a phase-matching problem, similar to that in nondegenerate four-wave mixing, limits the spatial resolution. Lensless imaging is shown to be impossible because of the nonlinearity of the process. The use of the process as a frequency-converting mirror in a conventional imaging system is studied with diffraction theory. Aberrations in such a system cannot be compensated by a phase-conjugate mirror with large frequency conversion.
