Abstract

An investigation was made of frequency conversion in sodium vapor. When the phase-matching conditions were satisfied and the nonlinear susceptibility increased under signal resonance conditions, the quantum efficiency of the conversion process was 40% at low pumping rates.

Resonant four-wave frequency mixing in the cw regime in sodium vapor

An experimental investigation was made of resonant nonlinear four-wave frequency mixing processes involving cw laser radiation in sodium vapor. It was found that, in spite of an increase in absorption, the use of resonant atomic nonlinearities can substantially improve the frequency conversion efficiency in the cw regime. The results of the measurements were compared with the theoretical conclusions. Ultraviolet radiation was generated at the sum frequency ( λ s = 268 nm) with the proportionality factor C = W s / W 1 W 2 W 3 ≈2W −2

Characteristics of resonant parametric conversion of infrared radiation in sodium vapor

Andrey V Aleksandrov, S. A. Pleshanov, Vladimir S Solomatin

A study was made of the dependences of the efficiency of resonant parametric frequency conversion in sodium vapor on the infrared radiation wavelength, vapor density, and detuning from two-photon pump resonance. It was found in this conversion system that for each infrared wave the conversion efficiency had three maxima on tuning the frequency of two-photon pumping over the region of a forbidden transition. The principal maximum was realized for accurate two-photon resonance, and the two other maxima resulted from a rise in the cubic susceptibility close to single-photon sum-frequency resonances. A quantum efficiency of 35% was achieved for a 9.26 μ infrared wave.

Laser-induced resonances in the continuum observed in optical frequency mixing in sodium vapor

Stefan Dimov, D.I. Metchkov, Lubomir I. Pavlov +1 more

Frequency mixing in sodium vapor was observed when the sum frequency was tuned near a laser-induced autoionization-like resonance. The energy characteristics of phase-matched conversion by a two-photon transition were optimized. The efficiencies of the various processes were determined under different experimental conditions. Saturation of the mixing signal on increase in the incident power was observed experimentally for the first time.

Resonant frequency conversion in sodium vapor

Vladimir S Solomatin, A N Meleshko, Victor V. Krasnikov

Infrared radiation was converted in Na vapor by two-photon resonant pumping of the 3s–4s forbidden transition in the presence of a quasiresonant signal. The calculated dependence of the conversion efficiency on the signal wavelength was in qualitative agreement with the experimental results.

Influence of stimulated Raman scattering on the conversion efficiency in four wave mixing

Richard Wunderlich, Moore, W. R. Garrett +1 more

Secondary nonlinear optical effects following parametric four wave mixing in sodium vapor are investigated. The generated ultraviolet radiation induces stimulated Raman scattering and other four wave mixing process. Population transfer due to Raman transitions strongly influences the phase matching conditions for the primary mixing process. Pulse shortening and a reduction in conversion efficiency are observed. 8 refs., 3 figs.

Parametric Frequency Conversion of Resonance Radiation in Optically Pumped Rb87 Vapor

Henry Tang

This paper reports an investigation of parametric frequency conversion in a vapor of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ atoms in which nearly resonant optical waves are coupled with microwaves at the ground-state hyperfine-structure (hfs) frequency of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ by the nonlinear susceptibilities of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ vapor. These nonlinear susceptibilities are greatly enhanced by optical pumping of the ground-state hfs levels of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ and by using nearly resonant light. The frequency-conversion process generates optical sideband waves which are separated in frequency from the carrier light waves by the ground-state hfs frequency of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ (6.835 GHz). These sidebands have been directly observed in the spectral profiles of ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{85}$ resonance light which had passed through ${\mathrm{Rb}}^{87}$ vapor. The conversion efficiency of power from the carrier waves to the sideband waves in a 45-cm length of vapor was greater than 1%. The observed behavior of the sidebands is in excellent qualitative agreement with the predictions of a semiclassical theory.
