Abstract

A strong decreasing of the intensity of the inverse 2-pulse, 3-pulse and long lived 3-pulse photon echo was observed when a current pulse passed through the strip evaporated onto the surface of the sample (current pulse was applied before or after the laser pulses). The strip is heated by the current pulse and there is the voltage difference at the ends of the strip. The voltage difference creates instantly the nonuniform electric field in the region of optical excitation so the echo intensity is decreased by the short-lived nonuniform line width rise. The line width rise is differentiated for the distinct type ion sites in the LaF3 unit cell. The strip current-heating gives rise to a phonon pulse. When phonon pulse reaches the optically excited volume it causes the shift of energy levels of Pr3+ ions, effecting a phase accumulation and the echo intensity change as a consequence.

The effect of heat ballistic phonon pulses of the nanosecond duration on the inverted photon echoes in ruby with the concentration of Cr3+ ions of 0.2 wt.% and 0.03 wt.% and in LaF3:Pr3+ for 4777 A (3P0 - 3H4) transition with the concentration of Pr3+ ions of 1 wt.% at temperature 2 K is studied. The basic result of given work: observation of coherent interaction of noncoherent heat phonons with impurity (interaction without coherence loss).

Multipulse photon echoes in LaF3 : Pr3+

Lynden E. Erickson

Multipulse photon echoes are observed from ${\mathrm{LaF}}_{3}$:${\mathrm{Pr}}^{3+}$ and are shown to be primarily stimulated echoes. The various contributions to the echoes were measured using a three-pulse photon-echo sequence that resolved the image of the echo generated by the first two pulses, and the echo generated by the second and third pulses and that of the first and third pulses from the stimulated echo. By use of a theoretical model of Shoemaker [in Laser and Coherence Spectroscopy, edited by J. I. Steinfeld (Plenum, New York, 1978)] and relaxation theory of Hu and Hartmann [Phys. Rev. B 9, 1 (1974)], the image echo contributions to the third echo is shown to be less than 10% of the total for the pulse widths and Rabi frequencies used in the measurements. As a result, multipulse photon echoes will find limited use in measuring coherence decay until very short high-intensity pulses are used to excite the echoes.

Oscillations of the photon echo intensity in a pulsed magnetic field: Zeeman splitting in LiLuF4:Er3+

V. N. Lisin, Шегеда Анатолий Михайлович, K. I. Gerasimov

A method of high-resolution time-resolved optical spectroscopy using oscillations of the photon echo intensity in the presence of a perturbation, which splits the optical frequencies of the transitions of two or more ion subgroups, has been proposed and demonstrated. This method has been applied to systems in which the Zee-man effect is manifested. The transition frequencies of ions are switched by a pulsed magnetic field. Oscillations of the photon echo intensity were observed in LiLuF4:Er3+ and LiYF4:Er3+. The first minimum corresponding to the accumulated phase of the electric dipole moment π/2 is reached in the pulsed magnetic field with an amplitude of ∼2 G at a duration of 30 ns. The Zeeman splitting in this field is ∼10 MHz, which is much less than the laser spectral width (0.15 Å ∼ 9 GHz). The g factor of the 4 F 9/2(I) excited state of the Er3+ ion in the LiLuF4 matrix has been determined in zero magnetic field. The comparison with the g-factor value found from the measurement of the absorption spectrum in a magnetic field of 8 kG has been performed.

New channel of photon echo signal relaxation in LaF 3 :Pr 3+ crystal

N. I. Znamenskii, Genady S. Katrich, Yu. V. Malyukin +4 more

An experimental investigation was made of the optical absorption spectra corresponding to transitions in the Pr3+ ion in crystalline LaF3 matrices. The investigation was carried out in the temperature range 5 divided by 80 K. An anomalous redistribution of the intensity was observed in the absorption spectrum of a Pr3+:LaF3 crystal. This redistribution did not agree with the hypothesis of the Boltzman population of the states in discrete multilevel systems.

Phonon-Induced Transverse Relaxation in LaF3:Pr3+ Measured by Photon Echoes

T. Kohmoto, Hiroki Nakatsuka, Masahiro Matsuoka

Temperature dependences of backward photon echo intensity have been measured from 5°K to 13°K on the 3P0–3H4 (4778 Å) and 1D2–3H4 (5925 Å) transitions of LaF3:Pr3+. Over six orders of magnitude (on the 3P0–3H4 transition) and three orders of magnitude (on the 1D2–3H4 transition) of the photon echo intensity, the experimental results are explained by the one-phonon process (the direct process) taking into account the energy differences between the echo levels and their adjacent levels. Preliminary measurements have also been made on the 4G7/2–4I9/2 (5221 Å) and 4G5/2–4I9/2 (5775 Å) transitions of LaF3:Nd3+.

Laser-induced instantaneous spectral diffusion in Tb 3 + compounds as observed in photon-echo experiments

G. K. Liu, R. L. Cone

We have observed a significant ``instantaneous spectral diffusion'' phenomenon in photon-echo experiments on ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$:${\mathrm{LiYF}}_{4}$. This laser-induced effect makes observed optical dephasing rates intensity dependent and can also contribute a frequency dependence to the measured rates. A change in the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$ echo ions and surrounding ${\mathrm{Tb}}^{3+}$ ions occurs when surrounding ions are excited. This causes an instantaneous shift in the optical frequency of the echo ion that lasts for ${\mathit{T}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\sim}1 msec. Frequency shifts caused by the first excitation pulse have no effect on echo rephasing (${\mathit{T}}_{1}$\ensuremath{\gg}${\mathit{T}}_{2}$), but those caused by the second pulse prevent proper echo rephasing. A summary is given of other ion-lattice and ion-ion interactions that can cause similar laser-induced effects in a wide variety of insulating compounds. There is potential for probing the nature of inhomogeneous broadening.
