Optical switching and bistability in tunable lasers

Abstract

We report the observation of optical switching and bistability, and such related effects as hysteresis, optical memory, multistability, and differential gain, in an electro-optically tuned cw dye laser. Similar effects should be observable in other tunable lasers.

Anomalous bistable behavior of a dye laser

An anomalous form of bistability and hysteresis has been observed in a dye laser at low excitation, when for a given pump power the dye laser may be either on or off. The dye laser exhibits a memory. It is found that if the pump beam is briefly interrupted the dye laser returns to the original on or off branch of the hysteresis cycle, but if the dye laser beam is interrupted, the laser always remains off. Ancillary experiments suggest that a multilayer mirror is responsible.

Optical Bistability by Using a Tunable Fibre Laser with Fibre Fabry–Perot

We observe a novel hybrid optical bistability by using an electro-optically tuned cw fibre laser with a fibre Fabry–Perot filter. The principles of the optical bistable device in two operation manners are analysed. The applications in monitoring the wavelength shift of a tunable fibre laser and fibre sensor of digital type are also discussed.

Bistable optical devices (BODs) are interesting for optical switching, limiting, memory, signal conditioning and logic [1]. Semiconductor-based BODs are especially promising because their large nonlinearities should permit development of compact, rugged and efficient systems. Here we concentrate on active semiconductor BODs and switches, that is those which have internal gain, such as injection lasers and amplifiers.

Adaptive Optical Logic And Switching Devices

Tunable Optical Bistability, where a low power control beam is used to adapt the hysteresis response and the switching of optically bistable elements, is shown to occur in various systems with a bichromatic input. Some applications of this are suggested for more complex logic gates and for pattern recognition.

Study of dynamics of optical bistability in Cr:LiSrGaF6 laser

We have experimentally observed thermally induced optical bistability in Cr: LiSGaF laser and studied the dynamics of switching between two stable states of laser emission. It has been shown that both the size of the hysteresis loop and the rate of switching increase with the increase of the rate of the pumping power sweep R [W/s]. The delay in the switching power and the rate of switching have been found to change proportionally to R2/3.
