Quantum entanglement in a many-body system exhibiting multiple quantum phase transitions

Abstract

We investigate the quantum entanglement-related features of the many-body model of Plastino and Moszkowski [N. Cimento 47 (1978) 470]. This is an exactly solvable N-body, SU2 two-level model exhibiting several quantum phase transitions. We show that these transitions happen to be also entanglement-transitions associated with different many-body Dicke states. The main properties of the model considered here make it particularly well suited to study, by recourse to exact analytical computations, some connections between quantum phase transitions and quantum entanglement-theory.

Entanglement Characteristics of a Spin-Boson Quantum Phase Transition

Neill Lambert, Clive Emary, Tobias Brandes

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semi-classical many-body features in the behavior of the entanglement. We consider entanglement between the atoms and field, as well both bi- and multi- partite entanglement between atoms. In the thermodynamic limit, we give exact results for all entanglement partitions and observe a logarithmic divergence of the atom-field entanglement, and discontinuities in the pairwise and multipartite entanglement.

Multicriticality and quantum fluctuation in a generalized Dicke model

Youjiang Xu, Diego Fallas Padilla, Han Pu

Quantum many-body systems that support high-order quantum phase transitions are quite rare. Here we consider an important generalization of the Dicke model in which an ensemble of multilevel atoms, instead of two-level atoms as in the conventional Dicke model, interact with a single photonic mode, and show that this generalized Dicke model can become multicritical. For a subclass of experimentally realizable schemes, multicritical conditions of arbitrary order can be expressed analytically in compact forms. As such, experiments can be readily designed to achieve quantum phase transition of desired order. We also calculate the atom-photon entanglement entropy for both critical and noncritical cases and find that the order of the criticality strongly affects the critical entanglement entropy: higher order yields stronger entanglement. Our work provides deep insight into quantum phase transitions and multicriticality.

Quantum Phase Transition and Entanglement in the Detuned Dicke Model

Ru-Fen Liu, Chia-Chu Chen

The quantum phase transition of mono-mode Dicke models with two atoms is discussed and analytical results are presented. For arbitrary detuning, the exact spectrum and the concurrence of entanglement are calculated for the two-atoms system. It is shown that sequential quantum phase transitions occur in this system. Evidences have been found to support that quantum phase transition and concurrence are uncorrelated in this particular model. Furthermore, the results of quantum phase transition with extra mode are also discussed.

Linking entanglement and quantum phase transitions via density-functional theory

Lian-Ao Wu, M. S. Sarandy, Daniel A. Lidar +1 more

Density-functional theory (DFT) is shown to provide a conceptual and computational framework for entanglement in interacting many-body quantum systems. DFT can, in particular, shed light on the intriguing relationship between quantum phase transitions and entanglement. We use DFT concepts to express entanglement measures in terms of the first or second derivative of the ground-state energy. We illustrate the versatility of the DFT approach via a variety of analytically solvable models. As a further application we discuss entanglement and quantum phase transitions in the case of mean-field approximations for realistic models of many-body systems.

Entanglement entropy, decoherence, and quantum phase transitions of a dissipative two-level system

Karyn Le Hur

The concept of entanglement entropy appears in multiple contexts, from black hole physics to quantum information theory, where it measures the entanglement of quantum states. We investigate the entanglement entropy in a simple model, the spin-boson model, which describes a qubit (two-level system) interacting with a collection of harmonic oscillators that models the environment responsible for decoherence and dissipation. The entanglement entropy allows to make a precise unification between entanglement of the spin with its environment, decoherence, and quantum phase transitions. We derive exact analytical results which are confirmed by Numerical Renormalization Group arguments both for an ohmic and a subohmic bosonic bath. Those demonstrate that the entanglement entropy obeys universal scalings. We make comparisons with entanglement properties in the quantum Ising model and in the Dicke model. We also emphasize the possibility of measuring this entanglement entropy using charge qubits subject to electromagnetic noise; such measurements would provide an empirical proof of the existence of entanglement entropy.

Entanglement, dynamical bifurcations and quantum phase transitions

Andrew P. Hines

Entanglement is a principle concept in quantum information science and is central to an understanding of complex behaviour in strongly interacting, quantum many-body systems. This thesis applies the quantitative theory of entanglement to analyse composite quantum systems. We attempt to provide a simplified approach to quantum phase transitions in the context of dynamical bifurcations. We consider the entanglement in the ground state of quantum systems with well-defined semiclassical analogues. In particular, we are interested in semiclassical models that exhibit bifurcations of stationary points. We introduce previously unknown connections between the entanglement in the ground state of such quantum models and the bifurcations in the corresponding semiclassical limit. In the case of many body systems, the change in ground state entanglement at dynamical instabilities is related to the phenomenon of quantum phase transitions.By investigating the ground state entanglement in a number of representative quantum systems, a connection between dynamical bifurcations and quantum phase transitions facilitated by the entanglement is demonstrated. The interrelationships between the three phenomena have the potential to facilitate a more general understanding of quantum phase transitions.
