Entanglement and entropy in a spin-boson quantum phase transition

Abstract

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semiclassical many-body features in the behavior of the entanglement. We consider the entanglement between the atoms and the field, an investigation initiated in Lambert et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 073602 (2004)]. In the thermodynamic limit, we give exact results for all entanglement partitions and observe a logarithmic divergence of the atom-field entanglement, and discontinuities in the average linear entropy.

Entanglement Characteristics of a Spin-Boson Quantum Phase Transition

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semi-classical many-body features in the behavior of the entanglement. We consider entanglement between the atoms and field, as well both bi- and multi- partite entanglement between atoms. In the thermodynamic limit, we give exact results for all entanglement partitions and observe a logarithmic divergence of the atom-field entanglement, and discontinuities in the pairwise and multipartite entanglement.

Entanglement and the Phase Transition in Single-Mode Superradiance

Neill Lambert, Clive Emary, Tobias Brandes

We consider the entanglement properties of the quantum phase transition in the single-mode superradiance model, involving the interaction of a boson mode and an ensemble of atoms. For an infinite size system, the atom-field entanglement diverges logarithmically with the correlation length exponent. Using a continuous variable representation, we compare this to the divergence of the entropy in conformal field theories and derive an exact expression for the scaled concurrence and the cusplike nonanalyticity of the momentum squeezing.

Quantum Phase Transitions in a Generalized Dicke Model

Wen Liu, Liwei Duan

We investigate a generalized Dicke model by introducing two interacting spin ensembles coupled with a single-mode bosonic field. Apart from the normal to superradiant phase transition induced by the strong spin-boson coupling, interactions between the two spin ensembles enrich the phase diagram by introducing ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. The mean-field approach reveals a phase diagram comprising three phases: paramagnetic-normal phase, ferromagnetic-superradiant phase, and antiferromagnetic-normal phase. Ferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can significantly reduce the required spin-boson coupling strength to observe the superradiant phase, where the macroscopic excitation of the bosonic field occurs. Conversely, antiferromagnetic spin-spin interaction can strongly suppress the superradiant phase. To examine higher-order quantum effects beyond the mean-field contribution, we utilize the Holstein-Primakoff transformation, which converts the generalized Dicke model into three coupled harmonic oscillators in the thermodynamic limit. Near the critical point, we observe the close of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited states, the divergence of entanglement entropy and quantum fluctuation in certain quadrature. These observations further confirm the quantum phase transition and offer additional insights into critical behaviors.

Heisenberg uncertainty principle as a probe of entanglement entropy: Application to superradiant quantum phase transitions

Pierre Nataf, Mehmet Dogan, Karyn Le Hur

Quantum phase transitions are often embodied by the critical behavior of purely quantum quantities such as entanglement or quantum fluctuations. In critical regions, we underline a general scaling relation between the entanglement entropy and one of the most fundamental and simplest measure of the quantum fluctuations, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Then, we show that the latter represents a sensitive probe of superradiant quantum phase transitions in standard models of photons such as the Dicke Hamiltonian, which embodies an ensemble of two-level systems interacting with one quadrature of a single and uniform bosonic field. We derive exact results in the thermodynamic limit and for a finite number $N$ of two-level systems: as a reminiscence of the entanglement properties between light and the two-level systems, the product $\ensuremath{\Delta}x\ensuremath{\Delta}p$ diverges at the quantum critical point as ${N}^{1/6}$. We generalize our results to the double quadrature Dicke model where the two quadratures of the bosonic field are now coupled to two independent sets of two-level systems. Our findings, which show that the entanglement properties between light and matter can be accessed through the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, can be tested using Bose-Einstein condensates in optical cavities and circuit quantum electrodynamics.

Dicke-like quantum phase transition and vacuum entanglement with two coupled atomic ensembles

Shi‐Biao Zheng

We study the coherent cooperative phenomena of the system composed of two interacting atomic ensembles in the thermodynamic limit. Remarkably, the system exhibits the Dicke-like quantum phase transition and entanglement behavior although the governing Hamiltonian is fundamentally different from the spin-boson Dicke Hamiltonian, offering the opportunity for investigating collective matter-light dynamics with pure matter waves. The model can be realized with two Bose-Einstein condensates or atomic ensembles trapped in two optical cavities coupled to each other. The interaction between the two separate samples is induced by virtual photon exchange.

Non-equilibrium entanglement in a driven many-body spin-boson model

V. M. Bastidas, John Henry Reina, Tobias Brandes

Abstract. We study the entanglement dynamics in the externally-driven single-mode Dicke model in the thermodynamic limit, when the field is in resonance with the atoms. We compute the correlations in the atoms-field ground state by means of the density operator that represents the pure state of the universe and the reduced density operator for the atoms, which results from taking the partial trace over the field coordinates. As a measure of bipartite entanglement, we calculate the linear entropy, from which we analyze the entanglement dynamics. In particular, we found a strong relation between the stability of the dynamical parameters and the reported entanglement. 1.
