Chirping of ultrashort light pulses by coherent interaction in samples with an inhomogeneously broadened line

Abstract

An investigation is made of chirping as a result of a coherent interaction of an ultrashort light pulse with a near-resonant absorbing medium. The effect of inhomogeneous dephasing is taken into account and shown to have a strong effect, which depends on the area under and on duration of the pulse.

Off-resonance slow light

R. N. Shakhmuratov, J. Odeurs

We consider the propagation of a light pulse in a medium with a single resonance. If the frequency of the pulse is tuned far from resonance and the pulse duration is much shorter than the lifetime of the excited state of the resonant particles in the medium (atoms in a gas, impurity ions in a solid, etc.), the group velocity of the pulse is appreciably reduced. It is shown that the slowing down of the group velocity of the pulse is accompanied with a pulse chirp, which produces a pulse broadening in time. It is proposed to use two samples in sequence with opposite chirps (up chirp and down chirp or vice versa) compensating the pulse broadening. Then the pulse can be delayed with almost no losses, distortion, and broadening. However, there is a maximum distance, beyond which the pulse experiences corruption. Pumping with an auxiliary laser beam can control the delay time of the light pulse in the medium. Conditions to eliminate the contribution of the dephasing processes in the pulse propagation are considered.

Propagation of the phase-modulated femtosecond pulses through the optically-dense quasi-resonant medium

А. А. Преображенская, A. A. Pastor, Pavel Yu. Serdobintsev +2 more

It is known that ultrashort pulse coherent propagation through the resonant absorbing medium leads to the pulse splitting and pulse train generation. First of these pulses is the input pulse and the following pulses are resonant medium response. It is also known that such a propagation mode leads to the «spectrum condensation» effect, at which broad-band input femtosecond laser emission, as it leaves opically-dense medium, centralized in the vicinity of the resonance absorption lines. It's interesting to clear up the dependence of a condensation effect on an input femtosecond pulse phase modulation value (chirp).

Small-Area Pulse Propagation on the Picosecond Time Scale

H. Hartmann, A. Laubereau

Coherent propagation of ultrashort pulses in the infrared is investigated theoretically and experimentally for the limiting case of small pulse amplitudes and homogeneous line broadening. Drastic changes of the shape of resonant pulses occur depending on several parameters, e.g., input pulse duration tp, molecular dephasing time T2, and absorption length αl.1,2

Interaction of Ultrashort Laser Pulses with Atoms in Plasmas

Valery Alexandrovich Astapenko, Valerii S. Lisitsa

The paper is devoted to the investigation of the absorption of ultrashort laser pulses on atoms in plasmas, accounting for the different broadening mechanisms of atomic resonant transitions. The analysis is made in terms of the absorption probability during the entire interaction between the laser pulse and atom. Attention is mainly given to dependence of probability upon the pulse duration and the carrier frequency of the pulse. The results are presented via dimensionless parameters and functions describing the effect of finite pulse duration on atomic spectra for different broadening mechanisms, namely Doppler, Voigt, Holtsmark and their combinations, as well as the Stark line broadening of Rydberg atomic lines.

Coherent effects during propagation of ultrashort light pulses in a medium under two-photon interaction conditions

I A Poluéktov, Yurii M Popov, V S Roĭtberg

An analysis is made of the evolution of high-power laser pulses in the case of coherent two-photon interaction with resonant media. It is shown that pulses of frequencies ω 0 and ω s satisfying the equalit ω 0 ±ω 0 =ω 21 (ω 21 is the resonance frequency of the medium) experience splitting into separate subpulses followed by a reduction in their duration and increase in their power. The efficiency of this process depends on the initial ratio of the amplitudes E 0 and E s . It is shown that such effects can be observed in paramagnetic acoustic resonance.

Frequency Modulation and Transient Effects in the Resonant Propagation of Coherent Light Pulses

Michael D. Crisp

A theoretical analysis of the propagation of near resonant and linearly chirped light pulses through a resonant medium is presented under the restriction that the pulses are far enough off resonance or weak enough so that they do not significantly alter the atomic populations. If the pulses are of duration comparable to or less than the phase memory time T(2) of the atoms, it is found that the transient response of the medium gives rise to amplitude-and phase-modulating effects. Analytic solutions are presented to describe the propagation of an off-resonant pulse which is very short compared with T(2) and an off-resonant rectangular pulse. The evolution of a Gaussian pulse having a positive linear chirp is studied numerically.
