Abstract

We study the EIT of a probe field in a Doppler broadened four level inverted Y-type atomic system. Effects of various wave-vector mismatch occurring when the coupling field frequency is higher, equal or lesser than that of the probe field frequency are considered.

Wave-vector mismatch effects in electromagnetically induced transparency in Y -type systems

Azeem B. Mirza, Suneel Pratap Singh

We study electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) of a probe field in a four-level Y-type atomic system driven by two strong laser (coupling) fields. Both homogeneously (radiative) and Doppler broadened systems are considered. The effect of residual Doppler broadening on EIT is demonstrated for various wave-vector mismatches occurring when the frequency of coupling fields is equal (${k}_{c}$ $=$ ${k}_{p}$), higher (${k}_{c}>{k}_{p}$), or lesser (${k}_{c}<{k}_{p}$) than that of the probe field frequency. Contrary to usual belief it is found that for the ${k}_{c}>{k}_{p}$ wave-vector mismatch case, the probe absorption profile displays very wide and almost complete single or double EIT windows whose width, depth, and location depend upon the wave-vector mismatch, Rabi frequencies, and atom field detuning of the coupling fields. Analytical results are also obtained to explain these interesting features.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in Y-type system

Kalan Mal, Khairul Islam, Suman Mondal +2 more

The propagation of a probe field through a four-level Y-type atomic system is described in the presence of two additional coherent radiation fields, namely, the control field and the coupling field. An expression for the probe response is derived analytically from the optical Bloch equations under steady state condition to study the absorptive properties of the system under probe field propagation through an ensemble of stationary atoms as well as in a Doppler broadened atomic vapor medium. The most striking result is the conversion of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) into electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) as we start switching from weak probe regime to strong probe regime. The dependence of this conversion on residual Doppler averaging due to wavelength mismatch is also shown by choosing the coupling transition as a Rydberg transition.

Revisiting the four-level inverted-Y system under both Doppler-free and Doppler-broadened conditions: an analytical approach

Arindam Ghosh, Khairul Islam, Dipankar Bhattacharyya +1 more

Abstract We report the occurrence of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the simulated probe response signal for a four-level inverted-Y type system that is being acted upon by a weak coherent probe field, a strong coherent pump field and a coherent repump field. There are two ground energy levels, one intermediate energy level and one uppermost energy level. The weak probe field couples the lowest ground level to the intermediate level whereas the repump field connects the other ground level with the intermediate level. The strong control field couples the intermediate level with the uppermost energy level, thereby forming an inverted-Y type system. The density matrix based theoretical model has been developed and solved analytically for this four-level system and the probe response signal has been simulated at different values of the control and repump Rabi frequencies, control and repump frequency detunings and under both Doppler-free and Doppler-broadened conditions using the parameters of 87 Rb D 2 transition. Extremely low line width (few tens of kHz) for the EIT signal has been noticed under thermal averaging for copropagating probe, control and repump field configuration. The EIT signal is found to be immune to the variation in the control Rabi frequency.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in Y-type atomic system

Kalan Mal, Khairul Islam, Suman Mondal +2 more

Abstract Probe field propagation through a four-level Y-type system is studied analytically under steady state condition by using density matrix formulation. The probe field scans the intermediate state from the ground state whereas two other coherent radiation fields, namely the control field and the coupling field, are set to couple two different excited states from the intermediate energy level. Under Doppler free condition, simulated probe absorption shows single or twin EIT windows depending on whether the control and the coupling field are on-resonant or detuned. Under Doppler broadened condition, the residual Doppler averaging due to wavelength mismatch between the probe field and the control field as well as that between the probe field and the coupling field plays significant role in the formation of transparency window.

Comparison of wavelength dependence in cascade-, Λ-, and Vee-type schemes for electromagnetically induced transparency

J. R. Boon, Evangelini Zekou, David McGloin +1 more

We present a theoretical study of the effects of mismatching wavelengths for the coupling and probe fields in Doppler-broadened media for the three basic energy level configurations commonly used to realize electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Three wavelength regimes are considered: mismatched wavelengths for which the coupling frequency is greater than the probe frequency, matched wavelengths for which the coupling and probe frequencies are equal, and mismatched wavelengths for which the probe frequency is greater than the coupling frequency. The transparency that may be induced in these regimes is compared for the cascade-, \ensuremath{\Lambda}-, and Vee-type systems. We show that in the first mismatched regime $({\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}<{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p})$ EIT is possible in all schemes and is in fact stronger than in the matched case. It is also demonstrated that for the second mismatched regime $({\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{c}>{\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{p})$ EIT can be realized most readily in the Vee-type configuration in the presence of Doppler broadening. These predictions are explained by considering the absorption as a function of both the probe field detuning and the atomic velocity.

Influence of Doppler broadening on cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level inverted-Y system: An analytical approach

Nguyen Huy Bang, Dinh Xuan Khoa, Nguyen Le Thuy An +3 more

In this work, we study the influence of Doppler broadening on cross-Kerr nonlinearity in a four-level inverted-Y atomic system under electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) condition. The first- and third-susceptibilities in the presence of Doppler effect are derived as a function of probe, signal and coupling beams and temperature of medium. Under EIT condition, cross-Kerr nonlinearity is enhanced several orders of magnitude compared to that without EIT. The Doppler effect leads to a reduction in the transparent efficiency and thus reduces the amplitude of cross-Kerr nonlinear coefficient. For hot atomic gaseous medium, such consideration of the Doppler effect may be useful for experimental observations and apply to photonic devices operating at different temperature conditions.
