In this paper, ultrashort, unipolar electric-field (terahertz) pulses have been used to coherently control population transfer between Rydberg states in lithium atom. Our numerical results show that populations of lithium atoms can be driven to lower or higher n levels with a train of half-cycle pulses, and the the transition rate is sensitive to the static-electric-field strength, the main laser frequency, the optical pulse profile, and the chirp of the laser pulse. If the paramerters of the half-cycle pulses is optimized appropriately, the population can be transferred to the target state completely.

Laser pulse design for coherent control of Rydberg lithium atoms

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach (TDML), this paper studies the dynamics of coherent control of Rydberg lithium atoms and demonstrates that Rydberg lithium atoms can be transferred to states of higher principal quantum number by exposing them to specially designed frequency-chirped laser pulses. The population transfer from n = 70 to n = 75 states of lithium atoms with efficiency of more than 90% is achieved by means of the sequential adiabatic rapid passages. The results agree well with the experimental ones and show that the coherent control of the population transfer from the lower n to the higher n states can be accomplished by the optimization of the chirping parameters and the intensity of laser field.

Quantum state population transfer of lithium atoms induced by frequency-chirped laser pulses

Using the time-dependent multilevel approach (TDMA) and B-splines function,we have calculated the five quantum state population transfer of rydberg lithium atoms. We also analyse the influence of the four major parameters of the requency-chirped laser pulses field on transition. The result shows that the population can be completely transferred to the target state by changing the parameters of the laser pulse and achieve manual controls to a certain degree.
