THE FINITE-SIZE EFFECT ON THE ENTANGLEMENT OF THE QUANTUM ISING CHAIN

Abstract

By using the concurrence, the entanglement of a quantum Ising chain is studied numerically. It is found that there is a gap in the concurrence of the nearest-neighbor spins at the quantum phase transition point for the chain with even spins. The gap disappears as the number of the spins goes to infinite. Except for the critical point, the derivatives of the concurrence display the similar scaling behavior as that of the odd-spin chain.

Entanglement and quantum phase transition in the Heisenberg—Ising model

Xiaodong Tan, Bai-Qi Jin, Wei Gao

We use the quantum renormalization-group (QRG) method to study the entanglement and quantum phase transition (QPT) in the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg—Ising model [Lieb E, Schultz T and Mattis D 1961 Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 16 407]. We find the quantum phase boundary of this model by investigating the evolution of concurrence in terms of QRG iterations. We also investigate the scaling behavior of the system close to the quantum critical point, which shows that the minimum value of the first derivative of concurrence and the position of the minimum scale with an exponent of the system size. Also, the first derivative of concurrence between two blocks diverges at the quantum critical point, which is directly associated with the divergence of the correlation length.

Entanglement in first excited states of some many-body quantum spin systems: indication of quantum phase transition in finite size systems

George Biswas, Anindya Biswas

Abstract We compute concurrence, a measure of bipartite entanglement, of the first excited state of the 1-D Heisenberg frustrated J 1 - J 2 spin-chain and observe a sudden change in the entanglement of the eigen state near the coupling strength α = J 2 / J 1 ≈ 0.241, where a quantum phase transition from spin-fluid phase to dimer phase has been previously reported. We numerically observe this phenomena for spin-chain with 8 sites to 16 sites, and the value of α at which the change in entanglement is observed, asymptotically tends to a value α c ≈ 0.24116. We have calculated the finite-size scaling exponents for spin chains with even and odd spins. It may be noted that bipartite as well as multipartite entanglement measures applied on the ground state of the system, fail to detect any quantum phase transition from the gapless to the gapped phase in the 1-D Heisenberg frustrated J 1 - J 2 spin-chain. Furthermore, we measure bipartite entanglement of first excited states for other spin models like 2-D Heisenberg J 1 - J 2 model and Shastry-Sutherland model and find similar indications of quantum phase transitions.

FINITE SIZE EFFECTS IN ENTANGLED RINGS OF QUBITS

Tim Meyer, Uffe V. Poulsen, K. Eckert +2 more

We study translationally invariant rings of qubits with a finite number of sites N, and determine the maximal nearest-neighbor entanglement for a fixed z-component of the total spin. For small numbers of sites we present analytical results. We establish a relation between the maximal nearest-neighbor concurrence and the ground state energy of an XXZ spin model. This connection allows us to calculate the concurrence numerically for N≤24. We point out some interesting finite-size effects. Finally, we generalize our results beyond nearest neighbors.

Quantum phase transition and entanglement in XXZ Heisenberg spin chain

N. Hachem, El Mostafa Jalal, M. Salama +2 more

Abstract Using the quantum renormalization group approach, we have investigated the entanglement and critical behavior of an anisotropic XXZ Heisenberg spin chain. The resolution of the quantum renormalization equations yields stable and unstable fixed points, corresponding respectively to the phases and critical point of the system. It is shown that a quantum phase transition exists at a critical anisotropy parameter , separating the Néel phase from the spin-fluid phase. Then, the concurrence between two blocks of sites and the quantum coherence have been calculated and presented for various renormalization group iterations. In the thermodynamic limit, i.e. , for higher renormalization steps, the concurrence and coherence exhibit two different saturated values in the two regions separated by Δ c . The first derivative of concurrence diverges at the critical point as the size of the chain increases, showing nonanalytic behavior. Moreover, the scaling behavior has been examined near the critical point with some universal exponential scaling laws.

Scaling of entanglement during the quantum phase transition for Ising spin systems on triangular and Sierpiński fractal lattices

Yu-Liang Xu, Xiang-Mu Kong, Zhongqiang Liu +1 more

Adopting concurrence as entanglement measure, we study entanglement and quantum phase transition of the Ising spin systems on the triangular lattice and Sierpi\ifmmode \acute{n}\else \'{n}\fi{}ski fractal lattices by using the quantum renormalization-group method. It is found that the ground-state entanglement between two spins (or spin blocks) depends on the following factors: the size of system, the magnetic field, the exchange coupling, and the structure of lattice. As the size of the system becomes large, (a) the range of the magnetic field, in which the entanglement exists, contracts gradually and focuses on the critical point; and (b) the first derivative of entanglement shows singular behavior, and its maximum or minimum is approaching to the critical point gradually. The scaling behaviors of entanglement on the different lattices are similar but the scaling relations are diverse. For the triangular lattice, the space dimensionality determines the scaling relationship between the critical exponent of the entanglement and the critical exponent correlation length. However, for fractal lattices, it is the fractal dimensionality but not the space one to determine this relationship.

Finite-size scaling of the entanglement entropy of the quantum Ising chain with homogeneous, periodically modulated and random couplings

Ferenc Iglói, Yu-Cheng Lin

Using free-fermionic techniques we study the entanglement entropy of a block of contiguous spins in a large finite quantum Ising chain in a transverse field, with couplings of different types: homogeneous, periodically modulated and random. We carry out a systematic study of finite-size effects at the quantum critical point, and evaluate subleading corrections both for open and for periodic boundary conditions. For a block corresponding to a half of a finite chain, the position of the maximum of the entropy as a function of the control parameter (e.g. the transverse field) can define the effective critical point in the finite sample. On the basis of homogeneous chains, we demonstrate that the scaling behavior of the entropy near the quantum phase transition is in agreement with the universality hypothesis, and calculate the shift of the effective critical point, which has different scaling behaviors for open and for periodic boundary conditions.
