We investigate Doppler-free absorption lines induced by counter-propagating polychromatic optical fields in the D1 line of 87Rb atoms. Cases of orthogonal and parallel polarizations are considered. The resonance associated with Fe = 1 demonstrates unusual behaviour with two-photon detuning: the amplitude grows while the width becomes smaller. The crossover resonance involving transitions to both sublevels Fe = 1, 2 of the excited state is more pronounced at parallel polarizations than at orthogonal and has smaller width compared to the lines corresponding to atomic transitions. A qualitative explanation of experimentally observed features is given.
We demonstrate Doppler-free, purely optical detection of laser-excited rubidium Rydberg atoms in a room-temperature gas cell. The Rydberg atoms are excited with a frequency-doubled dye laser at 297 nm in a single-excitation step from the ground state; the detection is performed with a 780 nm diode laser in a scheme similar to electron shelving. Laser spectroscopy of Rydberg transitions is demonstrated, and a frequency-doubled dye is stabilized to one Rydberg transition in the UV. The performance of this stabilization is measured with an atomic-beam apparatus and a time of flight experiment.
We study resonantly enhanced cascaded two-photon transitions in Doppler-broadened rubidium vapor, induced by an optical frequency comb. Cascaded two-step excitation of atoms from the ground state 5
S1/2 to the final 5
D5/2 state via an intermediate 5
P3/2 state as well as the influence of the frequency comb repetition rate on the two-photon fluorescence signal have been investigated. It is shown that the careful choice of
fR leads to enhancement of the two-photon signal with considerable increase of the final
5D5/2-state population due to velocity-selective double resonance. Since the double-resonance condition for two different rubidium isotopes is fulfilled for different
fR, the possibility of isotope-selective two-photon excitation is explored. The dependence of the two-photon signal on external magnetic field values and different repetition rates of the optical frequency comb is also investigated.
