Phase Transition and Hidden Orders of the Heisenberg Ladder Model in the Ground State

Abstract

A ground-state phase transition of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder model is investigated by means of the exact-diagonalization method. A hidden-order correlation is defined for characterizing the ground state. The critical point and the exponent ν are estimated accurately with the use of the hidden-order correlation. The relevance of the resonating-valence-bond theory to the present system is also discussed by inspecting hidden orders and the elementary excitation.

Numerical study of critical properties and hidden orders in dimerized spin ladders

S. J. Gibson, Ralf Meyer, Gennady Y. Chitov

Dimerized antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ladders are known to exhibit a quantum critical phase transition in the ground state, the existence or absence of which is dependent on the dimerization pattern of the ladder. The gapped phases cannot be distinguished by the conventional Landau long-range order parameter. However, they possess a nonlocal (hidden) string-order parameter, which is nonzero in one phase and vanishes in the other. We use an exact diagonalization technique to calculate ground-state energies, energy gaps, and string-order parameters of dimerized two- and three-leg Heisenberg ladders, as well as a critical scaling analysis to yield estimates of the critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$.

Hidden Orders and RVB Formation of the Four-Leg Heisenberg Ladder Model

Yoshihiro Nishiyama, Naomichi Hatano, Masuo Suzuki

The ground state of the four-chain Heisenberg ladder model is numerically investigated. Hidden-order correlations suitable for the system are introduced and calculated with an emphasis on the spatially isotropic point, where a corresponding material exists. The existence of a long-range hidden correlation indicates formation of a short-range RVB state in the case of the antiferromagnetic inter-chain coupling. A transition between the phase of the ferromagnetic inter-chain coupling and that of the antiferromagnetic one is discussed.

Ground state phases of the spin-1/2 J1–J2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice: A high-order coupled cluster treatment

Using the coupled cluster method for high orders of approximation and complementary exact diagonalization studies we investigate the ground state properties of the spin-1/2 ${J}_{1}--{J}_{2}$ frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice. We have calculated the ground state energy, the magnetic order parameter, the spin stiffness, and several generalized susceptibilities to probe magnetically disordered quantum valence-bond phases. We have found that the quantum critical points for both the N\'eel and collinear orders are ${J}_{2}^{c1}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.44\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$ and ${J}_{2}^{c2}\ensuremath{\approx}(0.59\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.01){J}_{1}$, respectively, which are in good agreement with the results obtained by other approximations. In contrast to the recent study by [Sirker et al. Phys. Rev. B 73, 184420 (2006)], our data do not provide evidence for the transition from the N\'eel to the valence-bond solid state to be first order. Moreover, our results are in favor of the deconfinement scenario for that phase transition. We also discuss the nature of the magnetically disordered quantum phase.

Ground State ofS=1 Heisenberg Ladders

Munehisa Matsumoto, Synge Todo, Chitoshi Yasuda +1 more

The ground state of S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (AFH) two-leg ladder has been shown to be gapful, in a whole range from the weak rung coupling limit to the strong rung coupling limit. The well-known valence-bond solid (VBS) picture for single AFH chains does not hold for this disordered ground state. We generalize the VBS picture to the plaquette-singlet solid (PSS) one to obtain a good description of the S=1 ladder. The validity of the PSS picture for this system is also supported by the finiteness of a newly-introduced hidden order parameter analogous to the string order parameter. We observe that there is also no critical point in the ground state of ladders with in-phase leg-bond alternation.

Resonating-valence-bond state: Comments on the antiferromagnetic ordering of the two-dimensional Heisenberg model

Mahito Kohmoto

We consider a resonating-valence-bond state as a trial wave function for the ground state of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square lattice. The energy and the staggered spin-spin correlation functions are calculated on a small lattice and are compared with the results of the exact diagonalization of Oitmaa and Betts. The trial energy is only about 4.7% different from the exact ground-state energy on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 lattice. The importance of the singlet pairs between the next-nearest antiferromagnetic sites is inferred. An argument against the previous interpretation of the numerical data as being evidence of long-range order is presented.

Scale perturbation in valence bond ground states

E. Rico

A simple and efficient method for calculating the ground state for a class of antiferromagnet systems is presented. It combines the valence bond structure of the ground state for this class of systems and real space renormalization group. As an example, the entire Haldane phase for a spin-1 chain is described, from the AKLT model through to the Heisenberg model, ending at the critical WZNW $SU_2(2)$ model. The picture that emerges from this new method leads us to consider the relationship between the hidden topological order that characterizes the Haldane phase and potential applications in quantum communication technology.
