Local-field effects in a dense ensemble of resonant atoms: Model of a generalized two-level system

Anatoly A. Afanas'ev, Andrey G. Cherstvy, R. A. Vlasov +1 more

The local-field effects are considered which are feasible in a dense ensemble of resonant atoms modeled by multilevel quantum systems. Our approach is based on the generalized two-level system [V.S. Butylkin, A.E. Kaplan, and Yu.G. Khronopulo, Zh. \'Eksp. Teor. Fiz. 59, 921 (1970)]. Making use of this model, we take account of the nonresonant polarization and Stark shift of the absorption line due to the difference in linear polarizabilities of atoms in ground and excited states. With near dipole-dipole interaction and quadratic Stark effect included simultaneously, new features of the hysteresis behavior of the population difference as a function of the external-field intensity are predicted.

Limitations of the semiclassical approach for the problem of two-level atomic ensemble emission in a resonant laser field

Anna V. Bogatskaya, A. M. Popov

Abstract Both quantum-electrodynamical (QED) and semiclassical approaches are applied to study the spontaneous emission of an atom or atomic ensemble driven by the strong external laser field. It is demonstrated that the semiclassical approach typically used for analyzing the emission of dressed atomic systems is inconsistent with the QED approach and does not provide a proper description of the emission of two-level atoms in a strong external laser field. That is, aside from a situation where the external radiation is nonresonant, weak enough and does not cause the essential population of the excited atomic level.

Transfer of the State of a Broadband Single-Photon Packet in a Nonresonant Interaction with Isolated Systems of Different Physical Nature: Simple Cases of Single Isolated Systems

Ashat M. Basharov, Andrew I. Trubilko

Abstract The derived master kinetic equation is used to determine the features of the nature of an isolated object, an absorber, on which the state of a broadband single-photon excitation is transferred. In the role of the absorber, a quantum oscillator or a two-level atom is considered. It is shown that, in the case of a nonresonant interaction between the packet and an intermediary, and between the intermediary and the absorber, the transfer of the state of a single-photon packet is possible if the absorber is a quantum oscillator. In the case where the transfer is to a two-level atom, the excitation transfer is only partial.
