Quantum dynamics of a particle interacting with a double barrier

Abstract

Following a previously developed method, the problem of a particle scattered by a double barrier is studied. Instead of the simple transmission or reflection, the more difficult case of the arrival in the region between the barriers is considered and solved explicitly by using matrix methods.

Time of arrival in the presence of interactions

Juan León, J. Julve, P. Pitanga +1 more

We introduce a formalism for the calculation of the time of arrival t at a space point for particles traveling through interacting media. We develop a general formulation that employs quantum canonical transformations from the free to the interacting cases to compute t in the context of the positive-operator-valued measures. We then compute the probability distribution in the times of arrival at a point for particles that have undergone reflection, transmission or tunneling off finite potential barriers. For narrow Gaussian initial wave packets we obtain multimodal time distribution of the reflected packets and a combination of the Hartman effect with unexpected retardation in tunneling. We also employ explicitly our formalism to deal with arrivals in the interaction region for the step and linear potentials.

Amplitudes of multichannel scattering on the barrier with a constant height in the scattering direction

Д. М. Седракян, Л. Р. Седракян

The immersing method is applied to solve the N-channel scattering problem. In particular, we consider the particle scattering on a multidimensional potential barrier, which is constant in the scattering direction and arbitrary in the lateral direction. For this case the scattering amplitudes t m and r m (m = 1, 2, …, N) are determined. Transition from the obtained formulas to the case of thin potential is performed. For this case analytical expressions of transmission amplitudes t m and reflection amplitudes r m are obtained. We show that the product of transmission and reflection amplitudes in the channel m does not depend on the scattering channel. It is assumed that the scattering particle falls on the potential with the longitudinal wave vector k l corresponding to the channel l.

Connection between the immersing and transfer-matrix methods in one-dimensional scattering problems

Д. М. Седракян, А. Ж. Хачатрян, Eduard M Kazaryan +1 more

We show that application of the immersing and transfer-matrix methods to one-dimensional problems of particles scattering leads to the system of two linear equations for the functions F and Φ expressed by means of the transmission and reflection amplitudes. The expressions of these functions are derived. The offered method is illustrated by the finding of transmission and reflection coefficients for the potential barrier with a constant height. The developed method can be applied in solving the quasi-one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems of scattering.
