Abstract

A correlation method was used to study experimentally a transient interaction of picosecond pulses with a gallium arsenide Fabry--Perot resonator. A nonlinear shift of the peak of a pulse was observed as well as its instability and splitting associated with the optical bistability effects.

Generation of Optical Bistability in a Fiber Fabry–Perot Resonator Using Mode-locked Picosecond Pulses

Kazuhiko Ogusu, 高顕 古野間, Jun Yamasaki +2 more

We demonstrate the generation of optical bistability in a Fabry–Perot resonator made of a fused-silica single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber. To suppress the undesirable generation of stimulated Brillouin scattering, a pulse train from a mode-locked and Q-switched picosecond laser was used as an incident pulse and the fiber resonator was synchronized with it. We observed first-order bistability, higher order bistability, and power limiting depending on the initial cavity detuning and mirror reflectivity. The obtained results could be well explained by our previous transient analysis based on an iterative method.

Stable and unstable states of a nonlinear silicon interferometer under external dc bias are investigated using Nd:YAG laser light excitation. Experimental results as well as calculations from a theoretical model reveal bi- and multistability and self-pulsing properties.

Observation of Bifurcation to Chaos in an All-Optical Fabry-Perot Resonator

R. G. Harrison, W. J. Firth, I. A. Al-Saidi

We report observation of bifurcations, higher harmonics, and chaos in an all-optical quantum system. These phenomena occur in a passive Fabry-Perot resonator, in association with deep and sustained Ikeda modulation of smooth input pulses. Results are in excellent agreement with our adaptation of optical bistability theory to the time-dependent regime.

Instantaneous frequency dynamics of coherent wave mixing in semiconductor quantum wells

J.‐Y. Bigot, Mary‐Ann Mycek, Shimon Weiss +2 more

Using a combination of interferometric-correlation and time-resolved intensity measurement techniques, we characterize the phase and amplitude of the coherent emission of semiconductor quantum wells resonantly excited by ultrashort optical pulses. We demonstrate that exciton-exciton interaction produces nonlinear phase shifts of the instantaneous frequency relative to the incident laser.

Bistability observed in a Fabry–Perot interferometer with quadratic nonlinear medium

B. Wedding, D. Jäger

Bistability due to a second-order dispersive nonlinearity in a Fabry–Perot resonator is studied. The experiments are performed on a nonlinear transmission line resonator. Nonlinear resonance curves, bistability as well as instabilities, and the generation of harmonics are observed. The theoretical treatment of bistability is based upon a nonlinear dispersion relation as derived from an inspection of two interacting harmonics or, in a second approach, of propagating solitons.

Instabilities and routes to chaos in passive all-optical resonators containing a molecular gas

W. J. Firth, R. G. Harrison, I. A. Al-Saidi

Dispersive optical bistability and instabilities leading to period doubling, higher harmonics, and chaos in an all-optical passive quantum system are discussed theoretically and experimentally. These phenomena have been observed for a wide range of operating conditions in ring and Fabry-Perot resonators containing ammonia molecular gas as the nonlinear medium. Laser input intensity, gas pressure, and cavity tuning are the main control parameters in observation of these effects. The experimental results are well modeled by our generalization of standard two-level system theory to include standing-wave, reservoir, and transverse effects.
