Abstract

We study the magnetization process of a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet with bond alternation by using the density matrix renormalization group method combined with interchain mean-field approximation. Particularly, we discuss how the interchain couplings affect the magnetization curve around a plateau structure in both of the Haldane phase and the dimer phase. It is shown that the antiferromagnetic correlation induced by the interchain couplings reduces the region of the plateau significantly, which will play an important role when the theoretical results are compared with actual measurements of the magnetization.

Magnetization process for a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet

We investigate the magnetization process for a quasi-one-dimensional $S=1$ antiferromagnet with bond alternation. By combining the density matrix renormalization group method with the interchain mean-field theory, we discuss how the interchain coupling affects the magnetization curve. It is found that the width of the magnetization plateau is considerably reduced upon introducing the interchain coupling. We obtain the phase diagram in a magnetic field. The effect of single-ion anisotropy is also addressed.

Magnetic Properties ofS=1/2 Heisenberg Chains with Bond Alternation and Randomness on the Strong Bonds

Kazuo Hida

The S = 1/2 Heisenberg chains with bond alternation and randomness on the strong bonds are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is assumed that the odd-th bond is antiferromagnetic with strength J and the even-th bond can take the values JA and JF (JA > J > 0 > JF) randomly. The ground state of this model interpolates between the Haldane and dimer phases via a randomness dominated intermediate phase. On the basis of the scaling of the low energy spectrum and mean field treatment of the interchain coupling, we find that the magnetic long range order is induced by randomness in the intermediate regime. In the magnetization curves, there appears a plateau at the fractional value of the saturated magnetization. The fine structures of the magnetization curves and low energy spectrum are understood using the cluster picture. The relation to the recent experiment for (CH3)2CHNH3Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 is discussed.

Bond Operator Mean Field Approach to the Magnetization Plateaux in Quantum Antiferromagnets –Application to theS=1/2 Coupled Dimerized Zigzag Heisenberg Chains–

Kazuo Hida, Masaru Shiino, Wei Chen

The magnetization plateaux in two dimensionally coupled S=1/2 dimerized zigzag Heisenberg chains are investigated by means of the bond operator mean field approximation. In the absence of the interchain coupling, this model is known to have a plateau at half of the saturation magnetization accompanied by the spontanuous translational symmetry breakdown. The parameter regime in which the plateau appears is reproduced well within the present approximation. In the presence of the interchain coupling, this plateau is shown to be suppressed. This result is also supported by the numerical diagonalization calculation.

Weakly Coupled Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

Ziqiang Wang

Quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets formed by a $d$-dimensional hypercubic lattice of weakly coupled spin- $\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains are studied by combining exact results in one-dimension and renormalization group analyses of the interchain correlations. It is shown that $d$-dimensional magnetic long-range order develops at zero temperature for infinitesimal antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic interchain couplings. In the presence of weak bond alternations, the order-disorder transition occurs at a finite interchain coupling. Relevances to the lightly doped quantum antiferromagnets and multilayer quantum Hall systems are discussed.

Field-induced transition of the Haldane antiferromagnets

Tôru Sakai

The field-induced long-range antiferromagnetic order in the quasi-one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnet is investigated with the exact diagonalization of finite chains and the mean field approximation for the interchain interaction. In the presence of the single-ion anisotropy D, we present the phase diagrams in the plane of the magnetic field H and the temperature T for H∥D and H⊥D. It is found that the two boundary curves of the ordered phase for H∥D and H⊥D have two intersections in the case of D>0 (XY like), while no intersection in the case of D<0 (Ising like).
